Windows Explorer reports incorrect Disk capacity

Mar 15, 2004 2:30AM PST

I have 2 HD. One is a 40GB partitioned into 3 C,D,E and the other is a 120 GB parttioned into 2 I,J. All was working fine until Windows XP Pro SP1 crashed and I could not restore it. Drive C: has W2K installed, works fine. Drive E has the non working WinXP. I did a new install of WinXP Pro SP1 on Drive D:. The problem is this.
Windows Explorer reports drive capacities as follows:
C: 20GB Correct
D: 7.96GB Correct
E: 0.97GB instead of 9.7GB and 999MB Free instead of 1.4GB Free.
I: 1GB instead of 50GB and 8KB Free instead of 15GB free
J: 61BG Correct

I get the correct disk capacities from Disk Management and also from Partition magic.
What can I do to recover the lost disk space. Please help. I have re-installed windows without joy.

Thanks.
George

How did you prepare the partitions?

If you used some third party tool, you may get to call them and ask how to fix.

I partitioned the disks using Partition magic. Partition Magic currently sees all the disk space correctly and does not report any errors.

Explains the issue.

There was no need to use that tool. PM is not without error.

Next time, just use the DISK MANAGEMENT TOOL and you won't see this issue.

The issue is that, windows actually reports that I have run out of disk space on the drives specified. I can no longer install any applications on the 2 drives in question.

Use Disk Management.

I've run into this once in awhile with PM. For me, it's rare since I only use the Disk Management tool. Try that?
