Windows Explorer quits working when I open a folder etc

Oct 5, 2008 2:40PM PDT

I have an HP9600 notebook with Vista Home SP1, it is almost two years old. When I open a folder or during a slide show Windows Explorer quits working, restarts and it happens again when I try to open the folder again. I had the same problem last year called HP tech support an ended up reformatting to correct the problem. The problem is back, the problem solutions feature on the computer suggested a software conflict with NERO, I uninstalled NERO with no change in the problem, the next solution option was to disable thumbnails and the problem went away, however I really like the thumbnails rather than the regular icons. How can I solve this problem and go back to thumbnails?

Microsoft has yet to offer a fix for this one.

So the fix is the same as before. Find the file that Explorer crashes on and move it to some other folder that you keep those files in.

And to be clear -> NO, Microsoft has shown no sign of fixing this issue since we first saw it in 1995.

Windows Explorer Crashes

Oldamish: I'm not quite seeing the correlation between Nero and Windows Explorer (WE) that the solution option is trying to give to you. Just to make sure I'm on the same page, when you have WE open and you click on Views do you see an option for Thumbnails listed first or does it have Extra Large Icons first? How much memory (RAM) do you have on your system? Also have you updated your video card drivers to the newest available?

1)When I click on view Extra Large Icons is the top option, I assume this is because I have disabled thumbnails.
2) I have 2 gb of RAM
3) I believe I have updated the video card drivers through the HP updates, but don't know how to confirm thst.

Oldamish:

1) There is no thumbnail option in Vista as there was in XP. You will see Extra Large Icons/Large Icons/Medium Icons/Small Icons/List/Details and Tiles as Views options. The thumbnails show up when using the three largest Icon choices but not for the Small Icons. I guess the Small Icons may show up depending on the resolution being used. On my system the Small Icons option and the List option look the same. You said that you disabled thumbnails, what option did you change to do that?

2) That's plenty of RAM for thumbnails and in general for Vista Home Premium. I was thinking at one point that there may not have been enough memory but you're ok there.

3) To check the display drivers that you have, look for Display Adapters in Device Manager. When you click the plus you'll see your adapter which you can right-click on and select Properties. Then you want to check the Display tab to see what Driver Version that you have. I wouldn't update it from there using the Update Driver option. I would instead go to HP's website and click on Software and Driver Downloads on the front page. It will ask for your Product Name/Number and also tells you how to find the exact number on your system. I would check the driver for the Graphics once you enter all that information and see if it is different than what is shown in Device Manager. Make sure that you choose the Vista driver and not the one for Vista 64-bit as that is for Vista Ultimate.

Any questions, let me know.

I should have said that there is no thumbnails option on the Views menu in Vista as there was in XP. Happy
