Windows Explorer drag and drop to CD

Mar 12, 2005 6:36AM PST

When I try to drag and drop data to my CD-R, Windows does not see the disk as loaded. If I put a CD in with data on it, it is seen. I can burn CDs with Real Player. Everything seems to work except writing to the CD with Explorer drag and drop. Any suggestions??

Only one Windows OS supported this. And..

Another poster went round and round for a very long time before they seemed to realise that it:

a. Didn't come with their OS.
b. They didn't know what software they had that used to work.

For now you can use CDBurnerXP to create data CDs and even MusicCDs without the drag and drop feature.

Links do not seem applicable

After reading thru the links (and I have to admit I did not understand some of them) I do not see the answer. I have performed this process in the past with no problem. I use Windows 2000 and have Nero. Is there a place to indicate what CD write driver should be used by Windows Explorer? I have added and deleted a number of programs since my last sucessful drag and drop to a CD and may have corrupted something.

Looks like the same issue to me.

Just like in the other discussion they thought the OS provided this.

In your case, you thankfully mentioned NERO. Nero comes with InCD which you should uninstall, reinstall and then update from their website.

You asked " Is there a place to indicate what CD write driver should be used by Windows Explorer?"

The answer is NO. Windows 2000 doesn't provide this or use a "driver." InCD, a software program does this.

Should it read a CD?
Mar 12, 2005 9:02PM PST

I can't even get Windows Explorer to read a CD. It keeps telling me to insert a CD when one is already there. Media player and Real Player both see it and play it. I have reinstalled the driver from Microsoft cdrom.inf V 5.0.2183.1 or 5.00.2195.6655 depending on which screen I look at in the troubleshooting area but no difference.

CDs play in this computer

Audio CDs play in this computer. I just cant access them using Windows Explorer and keep getting a message to insert a CD when one is there.

I don't make CDs the way you do.

Maybe that is why I don't have problems? Have you tried using your CD burning software? Drag and drop using Windows explorer usually means you are using either Direct CD or InCD. Those features are known to have problems. I'd recommend you create a CD with the same data using your burning software and see what happens.

It's also what I do. After finding InCD and such drag to disc to be only 99.9% reliable, I went back the plain old recording software because the .1 or less percent of the time it fails seems to be when it matters.
