Windows error Message

Feb 12, 2004 8:48AM PST

I'm using Windows 98. When I go to Start/ShutDown and try to turn my computer off I get this error message:
"A fatal exception OD has occcurred at 0028:CEAF0201.
The Current Application will be terminated.
*Press any key to terminate the current application
*Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to restart your computer. You will lose any unsaved information in all applications.
Press any key to continue."

I press a key to continue and get the same message again. I press a key to continue the second time and it starts to close down but doesn't quite finish closing. I have to then hit the on/off button to turn it off. How do I fix that?
Thanks,
John Whitehead

I usually narrow it down to some application that is crashing on shutdown. If it's very repeatable, the list of programs if you press Control-Alt-Delete can be a good clue to what's running. It's up to you to KNOW each and every one of them since the one you don't know could be a nasty bug or parasite. Tip: Use http://www.google.com and type in the name of the process you don't know.

The Shutdown Article at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm is always a good read.

Comprehensive and easy to understand also. I've added it to my Favorites and I suspect it will make answering some of these questions a lot easier!

For those that are still on Windows 95, 98 and ME, the Optimizing Windows links with articles about MEMORY, RESOURCES and more will be useful since today's technicians and most retail outlets have NO CLUE about this old OS.

While our office banned Windows ME, we are on a short handful of Windows 98 machines (four?) out of 150 and my old laptop (not that old yet) is on 98, but I have a Windows 2000 license for it when I (a) have the need or (b) have the time to push it off Windows 98. There is no reason to run 98 on that or anything else at the office except for the holdouts that want 98 and we just let them sit that way, rebooting 3 or more times a day. I give them about a year to move up.

This doesn't mean I don't like 98. Its a great solution and is nice to run something that isn't instantly infected by the BLASTER or other worm when you install the OS! And not everyone has the means to move today to the newer setups.

The AUMHA web site and ARTICLES offer a means for those to keep 95/98/ME spinning.

It is only a small problem 98 has on occasion. An application will not close completely thereby will not let the operating system shutdown, in lieu of a running application in rundll32. You can override this by going directly to shutdown in end task manager, then restart your system, which should restart with no issue, then try running a scandisk, defrag, and a proper shutdown sequence. It should shutdown properly.

You have an application running and keeping the rundll active. When you attempt to shutdown you will continue to get this error until you eventually use the shutdown from the end task manager (does it show any applications running ( do not include explorer and systray, as they are required for windows to run), my recommendation is to go into msconfig from your taskbar run box, you can also access it from msinfo32, and uncheck any items that are not required for windows to operate, and see if it corrects the shutdown issue. If so you have an application running files when it should be exiting when you close it.
