windows easy transfer is not easy

Feb 28, 2007 1:01AM PST

I am trying to transfer my settings, etc. from my xp system to my vista system. The windows easy transfer utility, like many things in vista, does not work. No matter what I do, or what I try to transfer, I get "Migration failed: Access is denied." The account names are the same, all of the network permisssions are set to allow everything and I cannot even get the documents folder to transfer. Any ideas?

Or...

Or it might be that the files you want to transfer are encrypted (there is such an option in xp, and probably also in vista) and vista doesn't have the key to decrypt.
Also what I encoundered when accessing xp personal files in vista is that the access rights have to be ajusted (it should do that automatically though) before first accessing.
Last possibility is that you just dont have the rights as the error stated. Make sure you are running this from an administrator account.

I did not use that feature myself as I do not trust it. Its better to make a clean installation (even though it is more work).

I could not get it work either, my xp kept crashing, I ended up buying Laplinks' PC mover, and using the belkin easy transfer cable, worked like charm, first time, Kinda of expensive for a one time use thing, but it depends on how much you have if its woth it to you or if you would rather sit and reload everthing.

Easy Transfer companion with belkin cable

I have twice installed the sw and cable to move programs from an XP laptop to a new Vista laptop. I get to the point where the instructions say "run" the ET companion sw....but how do I do that? I haven't been able to figure it out. Thank you.
