Re: WGA and Windows Defender error code

WGA is Windows Genuine Advantage, an Microsoft program directed at stimulating using genuine Windows, not pirated copies. I don't know if it's related to the problem.

http://www.google.com/search?q=0x80240022+%22windows+defender%22 shows this is a rather common problem you have. There seem to be several causes including the system needing certicates updates and problems with the setting of BITS (the Background Intelligent Transfer Service).

Vista + Defender cannot check for definition updates 0x80240
Mar 19, 2007 3:07AM PDT

Thousand dollar Toshiba Sattelite laptop.
Vista Home Premium with integrated Defender pre-installed.
(!) appears on Defender icon and (X) firewall icon displays in system tray.
Attempts to update Defender definitions fail, although Internet connection remains life and functional.
When one clicks on Defender's "Check for updates now" button, the system goes dark and a dialog asks for permission to continue (irksome but security).
After about a minute, Defender reports that it cannot check for definitions.
