cmd

When the new window opens, type

sfc /scannow (with a space between the c and the /

Have the XP CD handy and insert it if prompted. Or, if the application asks for the location of the system files, point to the folder \i386.

Another option to try.

If the system is otherwise working OK, goto the System Configuration Editor, and de-select the rundll.exe startup entry from the Startup tab.

To do that, goto Start > Run, type in msconfig and click OK.

In the System Configuration Editor, goto the Startup tab, scroll down and look for that Rundll.exe entry and remove the tick. Click Apply then OK.

When you next start the computer you will receive an information window stating you have chosen selective startup. That message can be suppressed from within the information window itself.

I just want to thank you guys because this fixed a problem I'd been having with my computer for about 2 months. I was about to trash it & buy a new one because the RUNDLL was keeping it from starting. It would start like 1 or 3 times I booted it - the other times it would just show the RUNDLL error and freeze. I googled it & found your thread. Anyway, it works now, so thanks again! Wink

That's quite right.

There is no legitimate program called rundll.exe in Windows XP. The Microsoft program is rundll32.exe.

As Mark said above: uncheck the line from the startup tab of MSCONFIG. The most likely cause: you ran some malware removing program that removed the exe-file, but left the reference to it in the startup part of the registry.

Try this. . .

Google Codestuff Starter. Great free program that is more comprehensive than msconfig. Download and install it, then run it. You can see Startup programs, Processes, and Services. When you find the offender, Starter will delete it for you. Then, download and install CCleaner. It will search for and repair registry entry problems. Take advantage of the registry backup before you use it. Great safe program.

Don't even think about SP3 until you have the machine running perfectly.

Can you go into regedit and find the string "rundll.exe". If there's one, post the context so we can see if it's safe to delete.
