Windows Backup Utility and my Reinstallation CD for XP Home

Apr 11, 2005 1:36AM PDT

I understand that this utility is not preinstalled but that I need to install it from the CD. But do I have the right CD? It is entitled "Reinstallation CD", and it has a note on it saying "This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or driver." And it also says "This software is already installed on your computer. Only use this CD to reinstall this software.

Dell did not send me any other CD for XP Home. Can I use this CD to install the Windows Backup Utility?

Questions about utility release notes
Apr 11, 2005 2:14AM PDT

The ReadMe.TXT for the utility says:

NTBackup Backup/Restore and ASR release notes

Backup/Restore

ASR

1. ASR is not supported on home edition.

IF you install NtBackup from the CD to the Home Edition, ASR functionality will appear to work fine during
the backup session. Since the setup does not support ASR in the home edition, there is no way to initiate
the ASR restore in case of a disaster. If you need to restore from this session, install Windows XP manually
and then restore from the ASR media.

2. Backup to CDRW

If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly. You must create a backup set of
650MB or less and backup to a file. After the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW.

Please refer to the readme for XP home edition for additional notes.

Me again: Although I presume that these notes do not indicate a risk in using the utility, I'm a little unsure about this.

I don't understand paragraph 1. I presume the disaster it is referring to is a failure of my computer to work, right? And I don't know what "from this session" means: it looks to me like it is superfluous and that the sentence would mean about the same thing if that language were removed. And when it refers to "install Windows XP manually", what does the word "manually" add? Would the sentence mean the same thing if that language were removed? If I am at that point, do I just insert my CD and reinstall? What does "manually" mean?

I presume that paragraph 2 means that if the utility is holding more than 650 MB and I want to send it to a CD, I need to separate the backed up material into sets of no more than 650 MB each. And I guess that the utility provides a way to do this. Am I right?

Comment about NTBACKUP.
Apr 11, 2005 7:41AM PDT

It's very old, no support for CD/DVD recorders and difficult to use.

I can only share it's there since XP is the replacement for Windows 2000.

Thanks, Bob, for the update

Maybe that's why it is optional.
