Windows Aero Gone and Networking Won't Start

Jun 25, 2010 4:11AM PDT

I'm using a eMachines ET1831-07 Desktop PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It has a Pentium Dual-Core processor, 4GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive. The machine has worked great for the past few weeks, but when I turned it on today, Windows Aero refused to load. I tried the Windows Aero Troubleshooter, but it couldn't find anything wrong. Then, I tried to google an answer, but I couldn't get on the internet. I looked in the system tray, but there wasn't any icon for the network connection. I recently discovered that the Network List Service is disabled, and when I try to start it, it says:
v
Windows could not start the Network List Service serviceon Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

The guy I talked to at tech support told me to back everything up and reload my operating system, but I don't want to have to go through that. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Last known good configuration.

You might try that and see if that helps.
Shut the computer down and then restart it.
Start tapping the F8 key before anything comes on the screen.
You should get a drop down with one of them saying "last known good configuration"
Arrow down to that and hit enter and follow the instructions.
In the drop down you also have "safe mode" if the first one doesn't help you can do a System restore to a date when everything was working right.
If neither of them helps, you may have to do a system recovery as the Tech suggested.

Restore to Date and Time

Thanks for your response! I tried "Last Known Good Configuration," but that made no difference. How do I restore to a date and time?

Thanks!

System restore

Do the same F8 thing and choose "safe mode"
Hit enter and you will see a bunch of numbers flash down the screen.
Once everything settles down you should have your desktop.Although a different resolution than your used to.
In the search type in "system restore" and follow the prompts.
It should come up with a few dates that you can restore to. See if there is one before the problem started and chose that date.
If not or that doesn't help, I am afraid you will have to call emachine tech support and they will talk you through the recovery process. That's not really a bad idea as you may have several problems and that takes care of them all in one shot.
Just be sure you have everything you want to keep backed up.
