Windows 98SE Boot CD

Dec 16, 2003 11:09PM PST

I wasn't sure if it is possible with Win 98SE but, is it possible to make a boot cd with all the updates, patches, service patches, and everything else Microsoft has released for this operating system to fix/update it? Since they are "phasing it out" next month, it would be nice to do this. Any suggestions? Thanks

Cool, Thank you!! I did as the post instructs and I downloaded the updates, 80 megs worth. I didn't do the .Net one's because from what I gather unless you have stuff that would need this, they are pretty much worthless. I will put these updates on cd now to use incase I need to reinstall after Microsoft gives up.

I just thought of something. The downloads that I selected didn't have anything to do with Internet Explorer 6. Is it possible somewhere to download the program and all the updates for that and archive? I'm wondering because I was thinking perhaps the next incarnation won't be compatible with Win 98.

Download IE6.0

You can download the original IE6.0 (English version only) from http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/6.0
It's the installation package of 76 Mb, which you can burn to CD.

You can even download IE6.0 SP1 from http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/
I think this will be supported by Microsoft updates (maybe not by Windows update) for some time to come, but you never know how long the support will cover a copy on Windows 98. In fact, patches for IE5.5 (without SP2) only support it when installed on Windows ME.
So it would be wise to download the current 'Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 (KB824145)' also, this time from download.microsoft.com.

Although reports on its use on Windows 98 vary, you seem to happy with it. So better have both these on CD also.
