Windows 98 SE splash screen stays 2 minutes

Feb 14, 2004 11:58PM PST

It seems that ever since I installed SBC Yahoo DSL I've been having start up and shut down problems. Now the problem is that when I start the computer the Microsoft Windows 98 splash screen with the flag and sky background stays on for 2 minutes while the activity light is going all the time. Have done virus scans and online trojan scans. I have very few programs loading at startup. Compaq 7360, 98SE 184MB RAM.

Adding a always on internet connection can lengthen the boot time. 2 minutes is not unheard of in such machines.

Can you share what's in your startup lists?

Use your choice of tools such as:

MSCONFIG
STARTER - Noted at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Another time-extending item is the usual addition of firewalls and the hard disks not being in DMA mode. The firewall for Windows 98 is highly debateable and if you loaded something buggy like Norton Internet products, then their bugs can catch people offguard.

msconfig shows:
CountrySelection
PTSNOOP
ScanRegistry
SystemTray
EM_EXEC
StillImageMonitor
PCCIOMON.EXE (pc-cillin anti-virus)
mdac_runonce (which I unchecked-it comes back)
LoadPowerProfile
LoadBlackD (black ice firewall-but I turn it on manually)
When I first installed the SBC DSL there was no increase in the Windows screen time. The only thing new I see when I load Windows in the Step by Step Confirmation (?) is Efficient Networks which is the DSL stuff.

I've found that you do not need their software to access the net. All you need is Microsoft Networking installed. Use any browser you want.

I currently have Comcast cable, but use my SBC/Yahoo home page via IE6. And I can access my SBC email as well as my Comcast email.

They hook up into installing all this "Helper stuff" that is not needed.

Uninstall their junk.

You can go into the account information regarding this program and other ISP software, and get the DNS protocols and email parameters to set it up as a dial up without the software. I have done so with this current ISP I use (Earthlink, and have done so with SBC Yahoo). Make certain you also hard copy the information from your printer, and the local telephone number you connect with. I get no irritating default browsers and popup windows upon connecting to my ISP, just a small windows confirming my internet connection to my ISP provider.
