Windows 98 Screen Saver
Jun 4, 2005 2:49AM PDT

That's is what is causing the problem - try another screen saver as the files maybe corrupt - better still turn the screen saver off and just have the screen go on standby after a period - screen savers dont save your screen they are just a gimmick - particularly with moder monitor these days that have power saving.

www.download.com for one but files are usually large...

control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, accessories, there is a screensaver option. Uncheck it, reboot, recheck it as long as you have the W98SE install CD or have the CAB files in Options folder.
I have a bunch of older W95 SCR's that I've collected and drop into fresh installs, and they aren't very large.
I also put a folder "SCR savers" on the desktop, then do a search for "scr" files, hilite all the ones that are valid scr files, right click, create shortcut, "do you want the shortcuts placed on the desktop?" Yes. Then I drag them all into the folder.
A double left click on the shortcut or any scr file anywhere will initiate it...don't move the mouse. A right click on them will have a "configure" option. This is all a way to shortcut "display properties" and having to choose just one. This way, when I want one..a different one each time, I open the folder, click it on, and walk away. Move the mouse and it turns off like normal.
irfanview, a free very good graphics handler, will allow you to make your own SCR from any folder with pics in it. It takes a little to learn it but worth it. When installing, choose "graphic files only" for reassociation to irfanview.
It will open a bunch of types and allow size changes that I.E. won't, and allow saving as a different format. I don't check BMP files because I still want to handle that with MS Paint.
More than you wanted to know...

$150 and up, XP home...XP pro...more important is specs...
Jun 6, 2005 10:03PM PDT

Check Ebay but I hardly see this on sale.
Note: OEM means the XP came with PC.
Min spec are 266mhz, 128mb ram, runs like a dog...
500mhz, 256mb ram, 6-8gb hdd practical minimum..
700mhz, 512mb ram casually reccommended if you're going to run a burner, RoadRunner, and all...
NOTE Dell PC's for $299 already loaded, 2ghz,512 ram?

Next issue is SP2 and resultant problems. See XP forum.
