Much like tossing your car keys in the river, that number may be gone forever. You can call Microsoft or the computer maker for new keys or buy a new licensed copy on ebay or elsewhere.

It is old so they are unlikely to help out. Most likely offer him a copy of XP Home at a rebate. I find it curious how people can lose a valuable registration certificate, while still having the CD? Devil

A little prep work before the install would have saved the product key for use in the install. I've got a hard and soft copy of the Belarc report for each PC in the house.

Only thing it hasn't told me, is what else my motherboard eats with those chips! Wink

When I got my Compaq Computer (5 years ago) the Product ID was on the outside cover of the CD.
I did think to record it on the front of my User's Guide. Since you don't need this number until you are well into a re-install it is easy to see how the ID could get lost.
I wonder how many people have the following:
CD ROM KEY #
PRODUCT I.D. #
PRODUCT KEY #
COMPUTER SERIAL #
