Wait a second. You mean you have no backup now?

If you read in most forums, one of the common problems is no backup. Folk lose it all and when you ask where was the backups, they other have none.

Your data, your choice.

Answer
I did the upgrade
Oct 17, 2013 11:59PM PDT

and I didn't backup. All my data and apps remained. Now the first time I ran Word a screen popped up saying it was configuring Office. After that I ran Excel and it ran without the message. Some of the Metro apps seemed to be updating the first time also. But i had no problem. I recommend that you set up how you want it to boot. The choice you have are to boot to desktop and then if you want tiles or Apps when you go to the Metro screen.

Answer
Yes, yes, yes - ALWAYS backup

Do have data on your hard drive you don't want to lose? Then BACK IT UP!!! Shocked Always back up whether you're upgrading or not. Hard drives wear out, power supplies wear out, motherboard capacitors go bad, power surges can destroy computers, viruses can wipe you out. So bottom line? BACK IT UP!!! Shocked Always.

Well when the upgrade is done

the old version is saved on your PC and it's saved as Windows.old and it's created for that very reason.

I have a Windows.old after

I did my upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1.

I had Windows.old when going 8.1 -> 8.1...

...but not when I went 8.0 -> 8.1. When going from 8.0 to 8.1 you shouldn't have to reinstall your apps, so there's no need for saving the old Windows folders. When you go from the 8.1 preview to 8.1, you have to reinstall the apps, which I believe is why you get a Windows.old in this case.
I believe I mentioned this earlier, but I'm running Windows 8.1 on one PC in 2 GB, and it runs fine as long as I don't open more than 6 or 7 tasks at a time.

Good luck.
