windows 8 to 8.1 update fails

by daveysr / October 13, 2015 12:14 PM PDT

Has anyone else experienced a problem updating from Win 8 to 8.1 after an OS refresh?
My Dell Inspiron, i5 @ 1.7Ghz, 6 GB ram laptop was originally a Windows 8 machine which I later updated to 8.1. However, after the refresh, it went back to Windows 8. Now the update back to 8.1 will not install. It replies with:
"Something happened and Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code 0x80070005".
It will download but no matter how many times I try, the install fails. Any help out there??

In reply to: Yes, they have.

Thanks R. Proffitt.
Since there are several options, It will take me awhile to go through each of them.. I have tried some to no avail, but there are many I have not tried. I will report back.
Oh, by the way; How does one disable the built in windows protection, or will that be necessary since it is a Microsoft product?

I've never had to disable that.

I have encountered this when Norton and other product protection is installed. But here I don't know what else you have other than Windows 8 the OS.
