Jul 7, 2013 1:16AM PDT

Does anybody know how to fix my problem? windows 8 is stuck on shut down screen for a longtime and if I do hard reboot with power button the same screen comes up and will not let me do anything.
I always run anti virus and am very careful about any downloads and files. This is first time this happened..

No make, model and most of all story. Yes we could cure it by going back to the factory load but what if the machine did this when new?

If this is a failure of the machine or OS such as restarting doesn't fix it, the make, model, any more story can help point to some ideas.

Such as: Did you try the boot into Safe Mode?

This is a 2 month old HP Envy h8 model. All was good until I shut down last night and when I went to computer in morning it had the shut down screen with the spinning circle going. When I hard end with the power button and wait and re-start, the same screen comes up and will not allow me to do anything. Sometimes I see some hard-drive activity but same thing, nothing else happens. I have disconnected the power for 2 hours but same results. I have not installed anything for a while and have anti-virus running always.

My last HP

Had a similar failure. Try this. Unplug all USB things and try again. Then try the generic reset (doesn't erase files) noted in the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum which in short is, power off, remove AC, battery then press and hold the power button for 60 seconds, release then apply battery, AC and try again.

My last HP (literally) had a failure right out of the box and at 3 months I narrowed it down to a BIOS issue which meant I could not plug in my smart phone and boot up (it would give the famous blinking cursor.) HP had me on the phone all day (8 hours) as they updated BIOS, drivers and finally they sent a box to return the laptop to service.

Why is that my last HP? The laptop came back in worse condition, locking up in minutes and another 6 months of calls and web forms asking me how they did resulted in no working laptop.

If you can get a refund I'd do that.

Thanks for your help. I have had a couple of HP's and had no problems. I wonder if its a microsoft update issue because we both know that microsoft and updates together sometimes means headaches. HA.
Thanks again for trying to help.

at last it worked

I called microsoft support and was able to find a solution. They had me unplug the computer and ethernet cable from the back and then hold down the power button and replug the power cord back into the comp. This stopped the shut-down screen and allowed the computer to restart normally. Yahhhhh.

Good to read.

Sounds awful similar to the generic reset provided in the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum.

The problem you are facing is the major problem that most of the windows 8 users have been facing.I being an IT graduate, too,is unable to fix this problem so i have came to the conclusion that Microsoft Windows 8 contains this bug in its programme.its none of our's fault nor the hardware's,win8 has this problem inbuilt.
as for your convinience,i must say that,i have somehow extended the period of crash-down by constantly cooling the system with an external source.
I must say, windows 8 has some surpassing capabilities but it is best that you use win7 for convinience.
