Question

Windows 8 reset help required ASAP

Dec 29, 2013 6:04PM PST

Hi everyone, bare with me on this, I'm new to forums but i am struggling to sort this on my own.

I am in the process of selling my HP laptop which is factory set to Windows 7 but i bought Windows 8 on a special offer. I tried a complete reset which windows 8 advised this would be the safest way to erase all personal docs etc. Having waited half a day for the laptop to reset it then crashed. Here lies my dilemma, the reset has deleted the hard drive partition so also deleted the drive where i need to reinstall windows. Is there a way of creating another partition using DOS or do i need specialized software ie partition magic?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Many people don't like Windows 8. So a laptop with Windows 7 might be easier to sell for a higher price than a laptop with Windows 8 and no touch screen. So going back to Windows 7 (if possible) might not be a bad idea.

But the Windows 8 DVD can be installed on an empty hard disk. It comes with it's own partition and formatting tool. No need for any other tool.

Thanks for getting back to me,

Problem is i have a windows 8 disk which i got with my PC, when installed on laptop it says either the hard drive is locked or unable to install as no drive to install onto. It gives me 2 options of custom install but if you click on each drive it says its formatted incorrectly? The other option is repair your computer?

Also it now won't boot up without a CD etc?

Not clear. First you said you bought that Windows 8 on a special offer. Now you say that you got it with your PC. So it's unclear what it is and if then license code is valid on your laptop.

Not clear also: what disk did you do to do the 'complete reset'? It seems asking for problems to use a Windows 8 disk to reset a Windows 7 laptop.

If I were you I'd go back to Windows 7 as instructed by HP using the recovery partition or recovery disks you made.
