Windows 8 Installation Issue

by j3sh / June 4, 2012 12:06 AM PDT

I recently installed Windows 8 using Oracle Virtual Box. I have done the necessary configurations and this error got displayed as I start-up.

Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.
Error code: 0x0000005D

Any idea of what's causing this problem & What should I do to resolve it? Thanks guys.

Clarification Request
Back to Oracle?

You may want to ask them if this is supported. Microsoft has made noise about restricting certain Windows versions in Virtual Machines. Maybe they are succeeding.

Windows 8 on VirtualBox

I just resolved the same issue. The idea is that you need to turn on the BIOS option (on your host machine) to prevent execution in non-executable memory segments.

BIOS changes insufficient
by krustybaguette / October 30, 2012 3:02 AM PDT

I have been trying to install RFM version of Windows8 Ultimate (downloaded from MSFT TechNet) under VBox v.4.2.2. I have enabled Memory Protection/Execution Prevention (That's how it's described in my Lenovo X60's BIOS). I have also checked and find that Intel Virtualization Technology is enabled. Host OS is Linux Mint Maya.
All of the BIOS related solutions to the "Your PC needs to restart..." issue have been in regards to earlier trial versions of Win8. I'm not interested in those as I want a fully functional virtual version of Win8 or none at all.

In this case back to VBox authors.

You need to report this bug or limitation to the VBox authors so they can act on it.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
