I just had the same issue, it was right after my computer fixed itself on start up.

Icons and background

That's interesting because my Dad was playing a game from Facebook and it froze. When he tried to recover the page it came back with Google Chrome gone and Internet Explorer back on the toolbar and everything missing. I had taken IE off since it kept closing down. Very strange. Anyone have any suggestions? Someone told me to check his registry but I have no idea where that is. I re-downloaded Chrome and unpinned IE from his toolbar. His home page had reset to MSN from CNN. Bizarre.

checked the desktop folder yet?

maybe they are still in it. Also check the taskbar or lower panel, they may all be there. Be sure he didn't right clk on desktop and choose to set as a webpage, because that will move all icons off the desktop and dump them into the lower panel.

try restoring to a previously saved restore point just prior to the icons disappearing.
