Question

Windows 8 Desktop Computer Re-Install

I am trying to reinstall windows 8 on my desktop and did a reset from the system in windows, which worked it got rid of the virus. But to make sure everything is really gone what I really want to do is clean the hard drive by doing a complete wipe and reinstall and new copy of windows 8 that I have which contains a product key I have. Back in 2011 I bought the computer and windows 8 failed (it kept saying it needed to be activated, we tried to enter the product key, didn't work, after several months of issues with our retailer and Computer manufacturer found out it had to be reinstalled remotely by Microsoft so as of now I have Windows 8 on my desktop but do not have a product key. So I purchased a copy of Windows 8 with a product key but can't install it.

The problem is my computer does not boot first from the CD drive then the hard drive. I can't find where to change this. I tried to go to the BIOS to change it but there is no prompt to select the CD drive. if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help I can get. I have a screen shot of the BIOS but  don't know how to post it.

"CD drive"?

In reply to: Windows 8 Desktop Computer Re-Install

Right there is a big problem. Windows 8 is on DVD so you can't boot it yet.

Besides that issue, I don't see a full make and model so no one can see if the BIOS settings are documented.

Easy if you know make and model. Unfortunately we don't.

Usually when you first power on, it tells you a key you can hit to get into the BIOS where you can set the boot sequence. There's also a key (F12 on mine) you can hit to determine where to boot from. YMMV, but in any case it will be documented in your user guide. I promise it won't give you leprosy to read it. Wink

Good luck.

My computer is a CD/DVD combo, have been told it may be a motherboard problem. Any thoughts on that?

Boot from CD/DVD fixed

Yes, I marked the thumb up icon. I thought that meant I was done sorry I am new at this. I was able to get the BIOS to set the CD/DVD to be the 1st boot on start up, but my drive scrubber software still wasn't working. So I put in a support ticket to the software company because I did get it to recognize the windows 8 disk to install. But I can't install it until I wipe the drive.

What you have to do is boot into BIOS

In reply to: Windows 8 Desktop Computer Re-Install

and set the CD/DVD to boot first. What this does is you set the boot order in BIOS so when you boot up it searches the drives based on the order you set. So if it doesn't find an OS on the first in the order it checks each drive for an OS based on the order in BIOS.
