Since both Windows and Xbox are from Microsoft, I'd Microsoft is the only one to blame.
Now the very first thing to do is to try this Xbox on another PC/laptop, and another Xbox on this PC. This simple experiment will show you what needs repair (either software or hardware) or replacement. My guess (not really based on anything): a new Xbox will function correctly.

Was using flawlessly with ie, video and audio files through XBOX Video and XBOX Audio prior to early May. Now works only ten percent of the time. When it does work, there is no pause or search functionality.
No changes were made to pc around time issue developed.
Windows and Avast are the only thugs set to auto update.
