Question

Windows 8.1 BCD Files Missing

Mar 18, 2016 11:50AM PDT

Hey guys. I've had a persistent problem with my brother's laptop, and I'm wondering if you guys can help.

We got a new SSD for him after his old HDD died, and I'm not sure what's causing this problem, but the AMD drivers screw up my OS files or something. Every time I refresh or reset the computer and install the graphics drivers, I have a different thing wrong with my OS and none of them ever seem to be fixable. This time around, it says that it's missing required information from \BCD and gave me error code 0xc000000d. I tried using advanced options from both my USB and my installation disk, but using bootrec /rebuildbcd can't find my operating system. I'm so lost and have searched everywhere for answers. Anyone know what I can do?

OS: Windows 8.1
CPU: AMD A10-7300 Radeon R6

If it's a laptop or make model use recovery media.

It's a laptop, and recovery media, as in using a USB or installation disk? Thats how I got into command prompt and found out that no OS's were found. System restore won't work, as it doesn't modify the boot files at all.

You'll have to tell me what install media you use.

Laptops have progressed (?) to the point a clean install is too hard on folk. That's why I use recovery media. Only you know if this model uses USB or DVD for such media.

As to the story so far, it sounds like a banged up OS. I'd start over.

I've tried already

This is the 6th or 7th time resetting my OS. Unless you mean downloading another IDO altogether? Perhaps upgrading to Windows 10 (which I'd rather not if I can avoid it)

I had a client that blew up their PC dozens of times.

They covered their tracks well for the first 30 or so times. Later we found the torrent software and well, game over.

Here we have an incomplete story so go with what works for you.

What else do you want?

I'm asking if there's another option other than redownloading everything.

Sorry but I don't have a good enough picture of the issues.

If the tools mentioned fail, it's likely some nasty thing that infected the PC or tools untold like a PC SuperSpeed Registry Cleaner. There are so many like that I can't guess what's up here.

The only tool that might fix it costs. Look at EasyBCD and their other recovery product.

Answer
Media

Are you using the factory restore media that was created when the pc was working?

If not contact the maker of the laptop and order the media.
