Windows 7 Workgroup

Nov 18, 2009 7:52AM PST

Installed Windows 7 on one system my other computer was runnig XP. I got the Workgroup going and life was good. I then udated the second computer to Windows 7 still using Workgroups and things still worked fine - sharing and printing. This worked OK for 5 days. For some reason the Workgroup name on the first system changed to WORKGROUP. I changed it back to what I had originall but now neither system can share. I get a error 0x8000035 Path not found. Now when I try to set up sharing I no longer get an option to setup a Workgroup the only option I get is a Homegroup. My router does not support IPv6 so I cannot setup a Homegroup. Is there a way to force two Windows 7 systems to use Workgroups instead of Homegroups. This is really frustrating because both Windows 7 machines were communicating fine until the workgroup name somehow changed. I think the answer may be I need a new router.

Windows 7 Workgroup
Nov 18, 2009 8:58AM PST

Thanks Tara. My router is not listed as one of the Dlink Window 7 certified routers because it doesn't support IPv6.My drivers are OK with the exception of the router. I can setup a Workgroup name but the issue is Windows 7 wants to operate as a Homegroup. What I don't know is can two Windows 7 computers share files as Workgoup only and not a Homegroup. I've looked on the internet but cannot find a definitive answer.

Homegroup and router

I have purchased a new router. I haven't set it up yet. Replacing the router seems like the quickest way to get things working again. I've learned in IT for 20+ years sometimes it's not possible to know why it's more important to not waste time and move forward.

Thanks
