in compatibility mode or in a virtual instance of XP. (Check Microsoft's Virtual PC or Virtual Box)

Which version of Windows?

You didn't say. Also, is this Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit?

What is this "Fatal error" message. Full message please, and at what stage? Do you mean when you try and install Virtual Box, or with Virtual Box successfully installed and you are attempting to install Photoshop?

How did you get on with the Compatibility Mode?

I think I have the V box in ok and I was trying to get xp on to the V Box.... when the "fatal:could not read from the boot medium!system halted." message came up....
and I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit ......

ps. where does the xp os get sourced from?

It may be
Feb 17, 2011 5:02AM PST

that this application won't work on a 64 bit machine although as I understand it, 32 bit apps should still work on 64 bit OSes. However, Photoshop 5's age may be against it.

I did find an Adobe Forum discussion about this here;
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2704562

I think it is saying much of what I have, except there should be a Compatibility option in the .exe files Properties.

I'm not sure what you're asking about XP sourced from. I don't know the answer but I did Google that error message, and found a few hits. One was this;
http://johnsonyip.com/wordpress/2010/03/23/fix-virtualbox-fatal-could-not-read-from-boot-medium-system-halted-error-video/

See if that helps. if not, Google fatal:could not read from the boot medium!system halted and see what other guidance there may be.

Good luck.

Try this

I have Windows 7 Home 64-bit I got the tutorial from http://photoshop64bit.host22.com/ and it works fine Photoshop runs as its supposed to just like it did on my old Windows 98 SE PC. If you want to and are still interested you can check it out. It feels significantly faster on my Acer Aspire TC-603 i7 4770 than it did on my Dell Dimension V350 Pentium II, at least I now can get rid of that old PC

Nice blog with more workarounds.

Yes, workarounds tend to have folk calling it a hack. But nice to have another way to keep using older apps.

Wow!
Feb 14, 2015 5:26AM PST

Wow! FYI So I just installed my XP Photoshop 5.0 on 64bit Windows 8 using the !!normal setup!! Seems to be working fine!! Need to test some more, but basically, I'm totally up and running! Nice!

I also have some other older programs too, apparently I can use the same process to solve any issues I run into with those too.

Thanks all, you helped me get to where I wanted to go.
