can i use a windows 7 upgrade kit i got from buying a compact desktop to upgrade a acer laptop which is running vista

There is no license to do that so while you can try it, the results if they did it proper should be at best a screen saying "Wrong Machine." At worst you'll end up with a machine you have to re-install the OS.

The upgrade media is solely for use on the machine that qualified for the free upgrade. You will need to purchase an additional license for the Acer.

If it is recently purchased it might qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 7. You will need to consult the Acer website for this info.

If it does not qualify for a free upgrade then you can purchase an upgrade version of Windows 7 (Assuming it is running XP or Vista) from the Microsoft Store, most online retailers, and most brick and mortar computer/electronics stores. The cost will vary so shop around.
