Windows 7 Upgrade Help

Jul 31, 2009 5:14AM PDT

Sorry if this has been asked before, etc, etc, but I need some help on upgrading to Windows 7. After dualbooting with the beta and then the RC, I love Windows 7 and decided to do the cheap pre order. I just thought about this now though... I'm currently dual booting Vista home premium and the RC. When I get the upgrade, does that mean I will be unable to do a clean install? I only use the RC now and havn't touched my Vista partition in a bit. My vista is currently cluttered with crap and I don't want to go through the trouble of getting rid of all of it. I'd rather have a clean Windows 7 and move all my stuff back onto it then have a single partition again. So my questions are: Is it possible to do a clean install with the upgrade on my Vista? Is it possible to do the upgrade on my RC? (pretty sure they said you can't do the upgrade on the beta/RC, i'm just checking) Or will I have to upgrade my Vista, get rid of all the crap on it, and move all my Windows 7 files over? Thanks in advance.

Upgrading W7
Jul 31, 2009 9:47AM PDT

Yes you can do a clean install or an inplace upgrade from Vista.
Microsoft link: http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-Windows-7/category/102
Make sure to save all your files first.
Any data files and settings you have in W7 RC can be saved and restored using W7 Easy Transfer Wizard.
All programs will need to be reinstalled.
Upgrading from W7 RC, while possible, is not recommended. You would have an additional problem if the need for reinstall arose, you would need to install Vista again or do the double shuffle with W7.

Follow-up to Clean Install

When is it safe to delete the windows.old directory that was created? Or should I save it all to an external drive just in case?

It's safe to install if you don't need anything from it anymore. But just in case you forget something, it won't harm to store it (wholly or part of it) somewhere else for a while.
