Question

Windows 7 ultimate sp1 cannot create map drives

Oct 3, 2011 4:55AM PDT

Hi,
I am trying to map to a network drive and i cannot, this is am hp laptop running Win 7 32bit ultimate, if i map to \\servername\sharename, cannot map, i cannot even browse to select the servername, i can ping the two servers i have, i also have the local account in the laptop in the two servers wich are still win nt 4.0 servers that only acts as storage servers, but if map using \\serverIP\Sharename, then i can map to it.
Question: is there any security settings that i need to change ?
i have others computers running win 7 6bit proff, and never had any issues like this.
Any help s very appreciated
Thanks

Answer
That's fairly advanced.

I can't tell if he NT 4.0 "server" is set for workgroup or domain mode. Since the basic details are missing I can't start a discussion. All I can think of is that the Windows 7 64 bit Pro is your best clue about this. Could be as simple as forgetting to add the new username or something deeper.

As i mentioned

The NT 4.0 server are only storage servers, no domain, they are in a Workgroup, the user name and password on Win 7 has been in the server for about 9 years, the other machines running win 7 can see the server(browse the server, they are able to map to them w/o the need of typing \\IP_servername\sharename, i meant there is something missing here somewhere in the security settings or something that i can't see, or some others software maybe installed in this computer had changed something, i am not able to figure out that is why i am asking cause if i type \\192.168.1.125\sharename, i can get map to the server but i just want to find out why i cannot use the servername
Thanks a lot

You did not mention "Workgroup"

And NT 4.0 has this habit of locking out old users when the password expires.

Try logging in on the NT 4.0 Server to be sure it has not expired.

With that out of the way we need to do more work -> http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/9e09b926-a23a-4351-ba76-0b960c0819a2

No. This is NOT SUPPOSED TO WORK on a fresh install. And sorry, I can't tell you why.

Thanks a i will follow those links

But again, i have installed already 4 computers running Win 7 proff 64bit the usernames already existed in the NT SERVER box and i just added those user names to be the same on each w7 computer so they match the Nt 4 box and the same workgroup name as the server and everything just go fine, w/o the need to do anything that says in those links, but hey there is always something new to learn, i will look into it and try to apply that to that laptop that is giving me that problem
Thanks again

Then you have a valid complaint to take up with Microsoft.

You paid extra bucks for Ultimate so try playing your "I'm entitled to an answer" card when you call them.

I'm just someone that admin'd microVAX (VMS), NT Server 3.0 to 4.0 and more and found this area to require some help in changing that LSA entry and maybe more.
