Windows 7 restarts when i shutdown.

Nov 17, 2009 11:51PM PST

I recently installed windows 7 64-bit ultimate using a clean install since i had windows xp. Everything installed ok. The problem I'm having is that when i shut down, it automatically restarts instead of shutting down. It runs through the BIOS and POSTS as if i restarted. There are no errors listed when it restarts. It's as if i pressed restart instead of shutdown. The only way i can turn off my computer is when i hold down my power button for 3 seconds. Any ideas on how to fix this? My comp info below:

Gigabyte GA-N650SLI-DS4 motherboard
intel Q6550 core2duo proc
2x500gb WD caviar black hard drives in RAID 0
XFX 8800 GTS XXX 320 mb video card
2x2gb corsair XMS2 pc6400 RAM
Linkysys Wireless G PCI Card
Soundblaster audigy2 soundcard
500W power supply

Tell us about the drivers.

Did you install the motherboard drivers after 7?

Many forget that step.

Does Gigabyte have a newer bios?

Many times that's to fix a bug like that.

Windows 7 found and installed all the drivers automatically. i did not have to install or download any drivers for my motherboard, video card, sound card, or wireless card.

Then what happens when you update these

The old fashioned way?

I'm finding nothing has changed in this area. We can't count on MSFT getting this right.

Any solution?

It?s been a long time since this post. I have been having this exact problem for 6 months now on my HP mini. If anyone has an update? I have tried:

- Reinstalling win 7
- update all drivers and bios
- disabling all wakeup capabilities on devices like wireless card
- checking the Start button settings
- in the registry, enabling the poweroff command line

To no avail...

You write

"update all drivers and bios"

But didn't tell exactly how. For example many will click on the Windows button update driver which we know is unreliable. try it the old fashioned way.

And remember that machine troubles can thwart this being the solution. You have to know when to get the machine fixed or replaced.

Well, I normally would go to tech repair shop...

but I am in RJ Brasil and there are no professionals here I trust (from previous experiences) From the start I noticed that there were quite a few people with the same problem related to Win 7. My conclusion is that there is a problem with the OS since nowhere hav I read that anyone with exact same problem as I have (like Prime0925 who started this tread... if you read this it would be great with a reply.) had had the problem sorted.

I don?t update just through windows, I have used the updates from HP and when possible to identify, from the hardware manufacturer. The hardware BIOS i got from HP.

If anyone have had my problem (exactly like in the original message from Prime0925) fixed, please let me know how!

Cheers

I don't see where Prime0925 has a HP.

And your post omitted the exact model number so I can't look any deeper into your issue.

Tips.
Oct 9, 2010 5:15AM PDT

Research what's in the Event Viewer.

Don't know the Event Viewer? Research that tool.

Can't fix it? Consider my favorite method. Pull the hard drive and install the factory supplied OS. If that reboots with a factory load (no, you can't add a thing!) then you know it's time for the maker to fix the machine.

Ok, pulling the HD it is

I am familiar withthe Event viewer and nothing. Just for your info and further situations. After the shutdown it takes a few seconds before it starts again. When I do a restart there is no such delay...

Thanks Bob, if I sort it out I will for sure get back here to tell you what it was.

Hawakai, your last post said once you sorted it out you'd come back and tell us what the fix was. Did you ever get it fixed? I am having exactly the same issue.

I have not sorted it out, so I never came back...

Hey,

It's simple.
Install Win 7 on a different PC using the same DVD, if it just works fine then its the problem with your laptop or desktop, could be your H/W or H/W drivers.. contact your H/W vendor.

If Win 7 behaves the same on a different PC as well then its the problem with the Windows copy.. contact Microsoft.

But, try this just in case..

Go to , Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings and click on "change advanced power settings"

you'll get a pop up box and find for an option "Power buttons and lid" and Power button action" and see what that setting says, it should read "Shut down".

Will be glad to help Happy

shut down reverts to restart
May 4, 2012 10:21AM PDT

I am having the same problem with a new Dell XPS 14z. Help!
All drivers are updated. I installed new software and now, when I shut down, the computer restarts instead of shutting down. This means that it stays on until the battery is exhausted. How can I fix this?

I can't tell what software you installed or you tried it without that and System Restore to when it worked.

Drivers and BIOS flash
Aug 23, 2011 8:52AM PDT

Hello,

While windows may find drivers automatically in the database or via an automatic update it doesnt mean they are the correct drivers for your machine from the manufacterer.

You want to ensure you have the manufacturer
-Chipset drivers
-Some have an additional separate driver for the southbride
-Video Drivers
-Any system utilities that are proprietary (Dell and HP are bad for this)
-Perhaps you also have your system to wake up/start via LAN and have a secondary device attempting to restore the system when it shuts down? Do you have a power controller or APC with Power Controller functionality? Possibly even via wifi through third party software?

Also, if it's an older machine you may have to do a BIOS update to run 7 correctly. In fact, you may have to do so regardless of age.

One last note to sit on is whether you left a screw loose or might have a piece of metal shorting out the board. Remember that a system is started and shutdown by essientially a short circuit. If you recently added any hardware you may have a screw behind the motherboard.

Also, you might want to run a viral and spyware scan as a sanity check and perhaps (if your at the skill level) explore your MSCONFIG.

I have read through all the entries in this thread
Aug 27, 2011 2:06PM PDT

and no one has suggested it might be caused by a BSOD in the shutdown operation. The default action on a BSOD is to reload windows and on some machines this can happen so fast that the user does not see the BSOD.
I suggest that anybody still having this problem turn off the Automatically Restart bit in Startup and Recovery which is in Advanced System Properties and then see what happens on a shutdown, there are a lot of reports of BSOD in shutdown

Windows 7 Restarts problem
Aug 29, 2011 7:52PM PDT

Hi,

To fix the issue, run a full system scan using a strong antivirus software. You also have to remove the errors and bugs in the system registry. You can run a registry cleaner to fix the file errors in registry. You can also remove the bugs manually from your system. You can disable the unnecessary applications to start with the Windows using System Configuration Utility. You can also remove certain processes running in the background using Task Manager.

Same Problem, Win 7 64 - Intel 7 9xx HP Pavilion replaced a power supply. System would restart after 5 sec. tried all the fixes found online. Still no fix.
Pulled battery on MB and Bingo... Had to reset the Date and Time in Bios. But now the PC shuts down.
