You post is a bit muddled and I had to read it a few times to get the gist.
But it seems this system has multiple problems.
1] Search provider. Is this your browser's search provider, and if so, is this IE? If yes to both I would "Reset" IE back to default and start again. You can do that in IE > Tools > Internet Options, then the Advanced tab.
But the others do not seem related. What is this 'settings.ini' and where are you seeing this message?
I would start by doing a complete anti-malware check. Anti-virus is not sufficent, so follow Grif's advice to the letter in his post below;
On a new eMachine Windows 7, my error messages don't appear to be de-flagging.
1. My default search provider's been reset and the toolbar which attempted to change it, uninstalled, yet on login, there's a message stating it's default's been 'corrupted' and it automatically pulls up the search provider options window. (Attempting to change add-ons in IE - Tools brings up a window with options hidden behind the little view window - as if resizing hadn't defaulted to the viewable window size.)
2. Gadgets have been closed, but I get an error they won't open every time I log on.
3. Settings.ini is 'in use' despite all programs being closed (gadgets, IM, email, etc.)
Since the desktop background won't change as requested (except to a solid color) I wondered if desktop graphics properties was still open in the background since access is available to it from different 'locations' (Control Panel - Display, and Graphics Properties) and appeared to have one monitor setting from one location, and a different one from the other (both have since been reset.) Also, the Desktop Slideshow won't save its changed settings as requested.
What is the Task Manager name for anything Settings might be using upon login (and what program might that be?) ...Or is there a setting to save all these settings at logoff that I may have missed? Thank you.
