Windows 7 Pro

Dec 4, 2009 9:30PM PST

Have just installed this over XP Pro., it does not seem to like some Dell products. I have a Dell 521 Inspiron and it is forever shutting itself down, so frustrating!
Installed Windows 7 basic on Dell 1525 laptop over Vista, no problems except some Dell products once again not liked.
Anyone any ideas about the first one?
I use Firefox and Google Mail, don't like I.E. 8
regards,
Bob

I did something similar.
Dec 4, 2009 10:27PM PST

But on a Lenovo. I had to eject a few items that were not liked too. If I need to work that issue I would have to ask Lenovo for a Windows 7 version of that product. As to the long shutdown I did a clean up before the upgrade such as remove antivirus, firewall and anything else I could to make it an easy upgrade. Not everyone can do that. But times are better than they were in Vista 64.

Windows 7 Pro - shutting down sporadically during sessions
Dec 5, 2009 7:33PM PST

Hi Tara, thanks for your email.
I am not sure which programme is causing the problem. I think I will get rid of the Dell usb mouse for starters. Yesterday I upgraded to the latest Mozilla Firefox browser 3.5 and thought I'd cracked it. Lets hope that we will get a Service Pack in the near future. Is your comp. working ok now? I did check the website you noted but let's face it I'm 75 so not so computer literate.

best regards,

Bob

No Upgrades for Windows 7
Dec 7, 2009 10:15AM PST

I was directed to numerous drivers that might help, but alas nothing did the trick. I was even told by one service rep to just downgrade to VISTA. This was a matter of wandering through the jungle.

Windows 7 Wreless Adapter Compatibility Issues Help!!
Dec 5, 2009 11:12PM PST

Help from anyone with this issue. I have purchased two products form Linksys the latest noted on Microsoft's website WUSB54GC, which stated compatible with a 64-bit Window 7. I use a Sprint MIFI 2200 hotspot card for my connection "which no customer service rep had even heard of" and it is an awesome product, that I am currently on now. My goal was to get out from under the cable cord nightmare, but alas, Windows 7 is not compatible with any wireless adapter product. One customer rep from Linksys' suggested that maybe I should just downgrade to VISTA. Please I cannot be the only one with a connection issue. Oh, I also purchased a Netgear product on the assurance from a Netgear rep that it would work. Nevertheless, they are clueless also. I even took my computer down to the original manufacturer's shipping state in the event it was the issue. I am desperate since I teach online and my desktop was a new purchase. Lucky for me I still have by trusty XP Dell laptop. The financial cost is crazy and to top it off the drivers for my Lexmark printer were not compatible so a printer was purchased, because no current drivers were available. Sorry for being so windy but I am very upset with this situation.

I continue to run into stories like this and find it to be the usual lack of support from almost everyone. No one seems to tell the poor owners that some technical issue or support is needed.

I see the WUSB54GC is fine on 7 and I think a buddy has one on 7 64 bit no less. But this won't save you as you learn how to connect to or configure the MIFI. I've lost count of WEP password issues.

Could be a simple thing but find a network guru to make sure.

I'd comment further but your post lacks details to spot where the real problem is.

It would do better to have your own discussion.

Thank you for the quick response

The first issues were OS non-compatiblity. The current WUSB54GC will install the drivers, but will error on the adapter install phase of the software. It does give me additional steps such as start over, unplug the adapter for 20 seconds and plug back in, reboot computer and Run Setup Wizard again. There are six steps, but after 6 - 7 tries one does lose hope. I hope this explaination does shed a little more light.

No light I fear.

The WUSB54GC does work fine on my buddies machine so all I've left with is no clue why your setup failed. It could be the old PROTECTION SOFTWARE issue (norton, panda, and others.) It could be the wrong driver but what you need is someone to fix it for you.

If you can't get that then return what does not work and buy something else.

Windows 7 Wireless Connection Information
Dec 6, 2009 1:00AM PST

Thank you for all that gave me food for thought. The key to making WUSB54GC connect for wireless access is changing the compatibilty tab to VISTA pack 2. I feel like a true computer greek and love it. Thank you to "all" for helping my brain kick into gear. I am now online, but have a full day on reinstalling all my programs, but this is truly a small price to pay.

Out of curiosity where did you pick up Windows 7 Starter?

Clear on the Term Starter

I first purchased Windows 7 from the Microsoft Store and installed it on my computer that had XP. This computer had many issues of non-compatibility, so I purchased a new tower that already had Windows 7 on it. So needless to say, this whole situation with the wireless adapter was a nightmare. I was so happy when I figured it out, but Linksys, Netgear & Microsoft were of no help.

I purchased my Windows 7 Pro from either Ebuyer or Amazon, I'm not sure because I got the Windows 7 Premium at the same time.
Does this make a difference ?

Drivers
Dec 12, 2009 3:03AM PST

If it were me...
I would have extracted the drivers from the XP Pro Computer before installing Win 7 on it...especially if you're installing from Win 7 install disc...not a Dell disc.

Extract the dirvers and back to to disc. Win 7 should both blow away your XP Pro OS and install Win 7. Then you can load the Dell drivers back to your computer. I've done this with a Toshiba lap top, worked well...BUT, the Toshiba did come with Win 7 Home and I blew it away and installed Win 7 Pro.

Problems Windows 7 Pro
Dec 12, 2009 3:38AM PST

Many thanks for your message but how would I do that. I'm a novice!
I still have the XP pro disk that came from Dell with the computer.
I'm starting to think that I should have waited until a service pack came out before doing a clean install.
I had a lot of time for XP Pro but it will all end by 2014.

Many thanks
best regards

Hi Bob,

I realize I may not have been very helpful on the drivers issue, one of the biggest problem people are facing are the driver updates, this was mostly left up to manufacturers. You can learn more about drivers here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Update-drivers-recommended-links.

The compatibility page I sent you to allows you to sign up for updates, so you can monitor when your drivers need to be updates so it should be as easy as click and go. Of course it isn't as easy as that... never is, is it? If you are noticing an issue with a specific piece of software or hardware you should go to the manufacturer website and check with them. I hope we can make your conversion to Win 7 as easy as possible! I realize some are having more issues than most!

Yours,
Tara
