Windows 7 niggles or what?

Feb 9, 2010 5:20AM PST

I have two laptops running Windows 7 and they have been up and running several days.

I have found two niggles which may or may not be Windows 7 related.

The first is that my network printer (HP Deskjet 6840) often starts off off-line. My only solution to get it up and running is to delete the printer and reinstall it. Though this only takes a few seconds it is annoying. The printer has the latest HP drivers.

The second niggle concerns Firefox. When starting up I often, but not always, get a window asking me if I will allow Firefox to connect to the internet. Again only a second or so but annoying.

I have no idea if these two problems are Windows related or not.

Has anyone else had similar problems and, if so, have they found a solution?

Do both issues happen on both laptops?

If so, I'd ask if the network connection is wireless? If so, I'd try wired and see if that makes a difference...especially with the network printer if it's also wireless.

Read http://reviews.pricegrabber.com/printers/m/4314493/ and it echos my thought about a new c4780 on wifi. It's the printer and drivers that need help. No news from HP on that.

The firefox thing. Same here. I went back to a wired connection and never saw that again.

That Firefox problem
Feb 9, 2010 8:31PM PST

seems to me to be a firewall issue.

My ZoneAlarm firewall monitors every application that attempts to access the internet. If a new application tries that, ZA pops up a window just above the Notification area, (where the clock is), asking me to give permission. There is an option there to 'remember' what I select. If I choose to allow access but do not select that 'remember' option, then ZA will ask again the next time the same application attempts to access the internet.

May be the same with you?
