I have a website which contains videos with a "share" icon. Could someone explain to me how this works please. If clicked on it just opens up my mailbox ready to type a message.

Yep, that is what it does

It allows you to 'share' the web site, video or whatever with others by emailing them the direct link. Try it and see. When the email window opens, send an email to your own email account and see what it includes when it arrives.

You said you have a web site. If this is your own web site then presumably you added the code to share this with others?
