May 4, 2017 3:14PM PDT

Hello community I keep receiving an error message trying to down load and install various software Bitfender, Clamwin and now Norton. (Temp/Rar/SFXO Folder In Appdata temp not accessible). I did have Norton antivirus program but after I tried to renew the license it would kick it out error so reinstall tool several times to no avail . So after speaking with a good tec from Norton suggested I reinstall windows due to the issue. Is this a mealwear or virus? I was able to install Free Avast Antivirus? From Cnet and was thinking buying full version if could correct the problem. Bitefender support not so great will get back you out 30 bucks hum! Norton was supper. So far I have tried to clean up the temp folders and a drive wipe using Ccleaner also registry. After reading lost of post on this subject Every body wants me use there products. So after I review there products I get don't down load them. I am so confused and some what computer illiterate please help me I would appreciate any help thank you.

We can't dig too deep as to whether it's malware, virus, trojan or such since we need to know the name of the bad thing to classify what the bad thing is.

However I guess you might be asking if the damage is this or that. To me it's damage.

OK, as to Norton, be sure to run their removal tool then hit ninite.com for your Avast.

-> I do not advise drive wiping. It's an unneeded step to get this working.

Reinstalling Windows is advanced UNLESS your computer uses restore media. I think you should.

1. Run Nortons removal tool.
2. Clean up with Grif's list at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3
Grif supplies links and all is free. If there is any offer, you likely clicked the wrong link.
3 Use Ninite to get a new AV.

Thank you so much to the community for your quick responses. I did down load Free version of Malwearbytes from (C-Net Thanks.) works well so far. It found 1230 issues a lot of PUPs and several Hijacks, adware, No Trojans as of yet hoping, If i can reinstall Bitefender it will find them.

I did use Norton's removal tool several times a long with there tec support who were very good but he had suggest a reinstall ouch! So I am trying others methods first be for that. For the restore point I messed and forgot to set restore point so that is not going to work thank you for that suggestion.

I think for all the tech savvy people and experts out there whats is this (Temp/Rar/SFXO Folder In Appdata temp not accessible) from what I read on this topic it could be the installers from Norton, or Bitefender, use to for there install path or is it a Malwear, Trojan virus Rar/SFX. or Thank you so much to the community for your quick responses. I did try the options on Winrar RSO it did not workbut it will uninstall to the folder location C:/ programs 86x folder.

This only happens when I have downloaded the software after trying to run I receive the message Temp/Rar/SFXO Agent Bitefender or Norton Folder In Appdata temp not accessible. and will not properly install. thanks again for help and viewing my post.

Sounds like an on going process of elimination that you're going through and it can be frustrating Confused
What model is your PC? Make and model number might help to see what we are looking at??

Suggestion:
Have you tried using System Restore... Restoring your machine back to an earlier date/time before you started to experience this current problem??
If none of the system restores can fix your problem maybe a fresh new install of Windows 7 will be the way to go - if it were me and out of options those will be my last two cards to draw.

[wait for more answers from others in case there could be an easier or quicker way to fix it]

Good luck!

How did you get w7 on that machine?
It's not supported by Dell.

Did you run Grif's list as mentioned above?

Prepare for a reinstall of the OS.
Make some backups of 'your stuff'.

E-Bay computer guy special bought hole computer, loaded with computer License and activation # giving to me buy seller. No DVD's Windows 7 booted up and put in activation code given and worked.

I have had this computer for about aprox 3 years and have used Norton for protection. I think I am going to start saving all my data files but before I due I will scan them for virus on an external drive and use my other computer. You get what you pay for. I due have a Dell 8300 I think it is time to move to that, just pain in the rear to save files reload. Is there a way to transfer files from desk to easier to existential drive 1TB I just don't want to bring the damaged programs with it. Thanks again out there community.

No I have not tried all the above (Grif's list) sorry that is a lot of work. I did look up Ninite.

In regards to no luck.

I think you haven't completed all the items Grif listed. Beyond that when Windows gets dinged up enough it's too much work to repair so we start over.

I don't think it's time to do that as it seems there's more bullets in the magazine.

Are things like pic's, doc's, vid's, music.
Programs don't move they need to be reinstalled so no sense copying those out.

Your right it is a lot of work to try and fix the machine after the damage has been done.
That's why folks make regular backups so that when it becomes a big mess they can reload without having to start from the beginning.

Locate that w7 activation code and write it down.
You might have a friend or neighbor that has a w7 disc that you can use.

Do use Grif's list to see if you can cleanup some stuff.

Hello! thanks again for the help I did take another look at Grifs list and it I tried to download Adwear but Malwearbyts has a conflict of interest and wanted me to agree to license agreement. Checking the web page How to Geek said Malwearbyts dose boht HUM! little confused on that one. Malwearbyts did find 1230 issues lot of PUPs and a few Hijacks. No adware or Trojans. After a reboot I deleted them in Quarantine. In the past Norton has lucky caught the Trojans.

I found a YouTube video on how to spot Trojans in the registry. I did a run check in the registry and found no Trojans I did find in (autorun) under Image Hijack Internet Explorer file should I delete that folder in the registry? Also various tools on the OP are not working error message so I think the OP might need a file repair option W7. ok running Rkill no issue found in logo. going to run Malwarebyts and Spuperantispywear in Safe Mod. Keep U updated thanks again community.

How did that come to be?

That's not stock so did someone get overzealous with some ANTI-SPY article on Windows?

I get the feeling you might have to get folk at bleepingcomputer.com to deal with this one. You might have bailed out of the advice given here and bleepingcomputer helpers use other tools that you might have more luck with as it does the work for you without you worrying about malwarebyte license agreements.

The win def and the temp folder problem is the work of norton.

If you still have norton on the machine uninstall it and then use the norton cleanup tool.

Okay community I was able to solve the problem with the installer. man I thought I might have that MBR virus ouch!

This all started last week because I wanted to play an older video game called Wold In Conflict but it would not install correctly. I kept receiving an error: 5001 : 0xffffec6b "So stupid me" try to change the Temp direction to C:/drive not knowing what I was doing. I was able to reinstall Bitdefender and uninstall Norton with removal tool. I still have Malewearbyts Premium and will stick with the free version this and Bitdefender hopefully should be enough for protection.

Yes I did get overzealous because, I wanted to look up every thing for reviews and for peace of mind and weed out some of the bull. Bleepingcomputer was very helpful with Rkill link and information thanks. I did not elect to go with AntiSuperspy wear yet. I Did not want to many conflicting products. My next tackle is to get W7 programs running right, with out a reinstall. Maybe replace the drives with drive booster. I hope doing more research wil lead to a simple fix. Also if anyone has a fix for running older games on W7 please let me know. I again thank the community for its quick response and help.

May not be possible.

And is causing a lot of folk to flame. That is, many new machines just hang on Windows 7 due to changes in updates and more. Get back to dell and see what OS is supported.

We have many discussions about how to make Windows 10 look like W7 on the desktop. Seems to be OK with many.
