But just last week a buddy complained about this. Turns out he has some TORRENT software running on startup and it's default is to stop the machine from sleeping or hibernating.
Mystery solved for him.

I have read several forums on this already but mostly they seem to have performance related issues. I have no issues my standby/hibernation in Windows 7 simply doesn't work. I have made sure all wake LAN feautres are off. There aren't any programs that should keep it awake or wake it up from hibernate or sleep. I may need to more thoroughly check that but they are the same programs that ran in the background on Vista. Generally two things happen, either A, it never goes into hibernate upon leaving it sit, I have programmed to do so after half an hour of inactivity, or B, I manually click hibernate upon leaving the machine only to find it already on the next morning with nothing standing out as a program that would wake it up. There shouldn't be any programs that bring it out or use wake on LAN, and like I said that is off. I'm seeing though that this is an issue throughout on machines with Windows 7, wondering if there is any hotfix or anys settings I should check more thoroughly to make sure. Thanks.
