Well, it's Win7 PROFESSIONAL you need for XP Mode, not Home Premium. So, if you were told you need Home Premium, then you were told wrong I'm afraid.

Though I do question the wisdom of running Win7 on that system. I don't really think you're going to be happy with Win7 on that.

windows 7 - XP Mode

The computer came with Home starter - I upgraded to Professional - and if I said Premium - my apologies. So far it is working fine - just can't run in XP Mode.

Well, in that case, did you go to Microsoft's site and download the necessary files for XP Mode? There's one ~500MB file you need to download and install, and then another smaller program to download and install. The XP Mode is NOT on the Windows 7 install disc.

The other option is what Bob suggested, but you already paid for XP mode, so may as well make sure it works.

Windows 7 XP Mode Installation
Feb 1, 2010 5:41AM PST

Yes, I downloaded the XP mode files and tried to install but the system would not let me install as according to Microsoft I do not have a processor with (HAV) Hardware assisted virtualization. My workaround ended up being downloading VM player - free and installing XP that way and using it.

Ah, I just thought the HAV in your initial subject was for HAVE only you dropped the E. My mistake.

If you don't have hardware virtualization support, then you're pretty much screwed as far as XP Mode goes. So, fortunately there are other options. They'll be a bit slower, but should work.

Workaround.

Since the exact CPU is not known use the OTHER tool.

Go get VIRTUALBOX and install that. Not going to supply links as you know how to search.

Now with VIRTUALBOX installed, install XP in that.

Done.
