Question

windows 7 freezes after booting up

May 14, 2012 3:24AM PDT

Hello, I have Windows 7 running on a Dell Latitude E6410. After I log in, the computer runs fine for about two minutes, where I can access programs and all, but suddenly the screen freezes, where it doesn't react to the keyboard or the mouse. It runs fine on safe mode with networking, but when I resume back to the normal mode, freezes. Any ideas what could be going on?

but a couple of options for you.

Since the freeze appears to occur at the same time after Windows successfully loads up, see if you can find out what is causing it.

1] Any USB devices attached? If so, disconnect those before booting up. If that doesn't help...

2] Open the Task Manager, (right click the Taskbar, select Task Manager). Open the Processes tab then ensure the option and the bottom to "Selected processes for all users" is selected.

Maximise the screen if required then click the CPU column header once or twice to list the entries in CPU usage order, with the most used at the bottom. This makes it easier to see changes.

Then sit and wait. Wait and see what process appears.

3] if that doesn't work, look at the time when the freeze occurs then when you are able, open the Event Viewer, (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer). Wait for the data to populate then check under "Windows > Application" and "Windows > System" for errors at that time.

Such as the 6 month canned air ritual. No, Safe Mode does not mean it is not hardware but we always check.

And what does run in normal mode on boot? Have you ever considered using MSCONFIG to try it with less?
