Windows 7 Folder Permissions

Oct 25, 2009 6:24AM PDT

I've been downloading videos and moving them into folders (ie TV, Movies,Comics, Etc) and I accidentally dropped about 40 into the DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder (found in the root directory) I clicked on DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS to retrieve them and put them in their proper folder and I came up with the warning:

LOCATION IS NOT AVAILABLE
C:\Documents and Settings is not available.
Access is denied.

How do I get access into this folder to retrieve the 40+ files I dropped in there? Permissions for Admins are all allowed and my user is an admin. I don't understand.

I'm running Windows 7 RC Build 7100

Interesting. I searched through my USERS directory and recovered them all. Kind of silly in my opinion. I had Vista for less than a day before I reinstalled XP. It interfered with Ravenshield so it had oto go. I switched to 7 and it still interferes with the game. But I don't play it anymore so it's no big deal. I like 7.

Thanks for the heads up.

The reason they exist,
Oct 26, 2009 5:59AM PDT

as I understand it, is a legacy to XP and earlier.

Microsoft decided to do away with Documents and Settings et al in favor of libraries, but because there is so much existing XP software still being used which installs into the Documents and settings Application Data folders, Microsoft came up with these 'shortcuts' as it were, to point to the User folders but act like the old style folder locations.

In time they will fall into dis-use I suspect.

The problem that Windows 7

uses virtual folders for it's library system. You can still create your own folders and move things there but you find them in the computer secion of winodws explorer.
