This was true in prior versions too.

As Windows 7 adds even more details to views it gets even slower.

If you want fast, turn off all the pretty stuff or use a non-graphic tool like Gyula's Navigator.

Nothing really new here. Same old issue, discussion. Nothing really busted either.

Change the view.

Try list views, and be careful about what columns are enabled. Some will have Explorer opening the files to read more details. Nothing really new here in 7 that didn't apply to prior versions.

Disable Graphics
Jun 14, 2010 5:24AM PDT

To turn off display graphics:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
In the Settings box, scroll down to the Multimedia section. Clear the following boxes.
◦a. Play animations in Web pages
◦b. Play sounds in Web pages
◦c. Play videos in Web pages
4.Click Apply.

Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Cassandra

It probably isn't a graphics issue but the way Explorer displays the files. Change that way in the View Menu Icon from thumbnails or icons, to List or Details.

And as Bob says, reduce the column details, which may not all be required. I just have Name, Type, Size, and Date Modified.

You can do that by right clicking a column header and choosing what to display and what to remove.

Also, watch out in future with videos and images. If Explorer is set to show thumbnails or icons, it will always try to 'render' each file. If it comes across a corrupted file Explorer will often fail and either freeze or shut down. hat doesn't happen in List or Details view.

There was a nice article about this.

But I can't find it. It's all about the experience so as we task the file explorer to present more and more detail the speed drops. It's that simple.

If there are thumbnails or details to fetch from the files, big speed losses.

This we know. Now what is the question?

If the OSes differ in speed, we know that. I have another open discussion where the video speed is terrible in XP and it's all about the OS install. Here we don't have the details. FOR EXAMPLE my clean install of 7 was not up to snuff on a HP d4999t. After a few questions I found out I needed ONE MORE THING. Now its fine. If I was not asking about this and that and supplying details I could get the idea that there was something wrong with 7.
