I was updating my computer and it crashed. I can't get to my home page.

I bought it three seasons ago (21/2 year old laptop) My question too.. how in the world can I fix my g7 HP pavilion notebook that i bought new in the fall of 2011 pre-installed windows 7 home premium? I used AVG ATTI VIRUS when it was time to upgrade from AVG 2013 to AVG 2014 as it was suggested by AVG popup .. all hell broke loose! I thought I did something right but apparently the update caused windows to run a muck.. windows started updating more frequent updating patches..taking really long to shut down or boot up.. from there AVG strongly advised to buy their premium without me contacting them! I suspect AVG has something to do with crashing my 2 and a half year old HP pavilion laptop. I never made a recovery disk.. i phoned both compact and microsoft.. they blame each other and want money to service this crashed pc.. I actually suspect big brother (nsa $) is attacking us online and racketeering with corporate criminal enterprises. If no body is to held accountable but the customers themselves than , why do we even need to pay or even support any type of NSA organization? jmho,,
So this is what our government has in store with windows.. crash my computer and press me to spend my hard earned savings to support their devilish racketeering control communistic snake in the grass endeavors. i WANT TO SUE MY GOVERNMENT
and now you blame the govt? If they invaded your computer, it's likely you'd never know it, nor have any obvious symptoms at all. When you come back down to earth, maybe helpers here can figure it out.
What were you updating on your computer?
what do you mean by home page, something at microsoft update?
Was this AV being updated?
Maybe it crashed because i TRUSTED Microsoft's auto updating which was to automatically correct any issues as it was suggesting to me not to turn off my pc.. yet afterall that time their auto updating wasn't keeping up with the updates or maybe infecting my pc instead? All I know is I phoned HP help line and they put the blame on microsoft.. so i phoned them and spoke to another india accent rep.. also outsourced in overseas India. They also blamed it on HP warranty licensing etc. I phoned HP AGAIN.. wanted to sell me svc by credit card for diagnosing over the phone and than said it is a hardware issue after i read them numbers off my computer ,, the estimated repair costs were over an outlandish 400+ dollars ! my 2 year old notebook.has no hardware issues.. I do not understand computers but, I won't spend a dime more on a HP service or product ever again after that treatment over their phone help service. UPDATING WINDOWS ANYTHING IS A JOKE.. I DO NOT BLAME THE USA GOVERNMENT AND DO NOT HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.. LOL
When I thought I updated the AVG 2013 to 2014 as it was recommended.. shortly after, the windows updating errors and restarting problems started happening.. eventually what ever infected my laptop ate up the brains of my store bought 7 windows home premium on my 2 year old HP pavilion.. I suspected it might be a virus and took a 8 g memory stick and think i tried salvaging the windows 7 but not sure and didn't try using the usb memory stick yet.. perhaps it will have the recovery to reboot to restore the crashed computer?
I'm still not sure what your laptop is doing, or not doing, that is bothering you. You are speaking in generalities, not giving any specifics.
okay, i will try to post all specifics in hopes you can advise me the cheapest option to repair/refurbish/upgrade my HP pavilion i purchased new in late 2011. FIRST OFF ..AT START UP .. IT SOUNDS THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS DID, I do not suspect a hardware issue,, but rather an infected program caused by AVG updating or from what I suspect lack of microsoft's (recommended) auto updating which I know I had always had on default.. Early December 2013, AVG free edition requested/recommended I upgfrade to AVG 2014 free edition. I complied and thought I followed the recommended instructions as to removing the outdated version and than upgraded to the AVG 2014 free edition.. than about that time.. my windows home premium os started acting funny in that it requested I not shut off my pc as it was filing updating patches or whatever it does in the recommended auto updating default.I always was sure to be checked. I always cleaned my files too in hopes to better safeguard my pc from any malicious programs/malware or whatever. I just read a topic yesterday on this site about hackers breaking windows 7 os critical start up codes? Not sure if this might be the case.. the trouble is, on power up.. I now only get a blank blue windows screen,, (sun rays windows screen) I think I might have copied my windows os before it got to this crash point but not sure cause i didn't try plugging it in the usb yet..I fear that i might loose the memory strip data should a one time attempt to use it on the existing (what i suspect now as a fully corrupted or damaged beyond repairthe original factory harddrive).. should I try it or first buy a compatable HP pavilion oem drive? think I can do it myself without damaging the laptop.. but not sure if I salvaged the windows 7 os or if a better os system is recommended knowing how microsoft os are notorious for hacks/crashing this os.. is there a good tutorial how to DIY laptop repair/upgrade or at least diagnostic tutorial to determine what is recommended? I rather throw it away than give HP a penny for their expensive estimate they quoted me by phone help. tia , john
I would really like to fix my own laptop os software /hardware issues to avoid the high cost estimates I was quoted on the HP SUPPORT LINE. I do not believe their service or warranty fees are justifiable for this store bought Pavilion HP G7 1150 us I purchased in late 2011. When I requested help for a recovery disk from HP support, they said, my laptop is no longer under warranty of service,, they are not going to provide me any recovery disk free of charge.. my question is if i bought the licensed windows7 home premium pre-installed.. are they not obligated to provide me from their webbase or somewhere I can download my HP product recovery os on a usb memory drive i will provide? I since bought a new Acer desktop..I just want to fix the HP for a secondary back up
you are stuck on a "blue screen of death" and have no restore disc available. You may or not have checked for a recovery partition where that data resides so that you can use it. It is now a second backup computer. You are mad at Microsoft, HP and maybe others.
Do you know how to burn an ISO image onto a CDR or DVDR disc? If so, then go here and download and burn a copy of this free operating system. You can boot direct from the DVD drive later and then we can discover more accurately what is wrong with your computer.

http://mirror.umd.edu/linuxmint/images/stable/16/linuxmint-16-mate-dvd-64bit.iso
this last link is from maryland university and the 64 bit version, since you had a 64 bit OS installed previously. Download, burn to DVD, then on boot, hit whatever key is needed to give a boot option, choose to boot from DVD. You will enter the Linux Mint 16 operating system as a LIVE DVD version. At that point I or someone here can help you better diagnose your problem because there are programs on there which can give a readout of what's going on in your system. If you wish another mirror site to download from, there's a list of them on that second link.
At least since XP, microsoft updates have worked the same way. You can set them to never download, to ask you first, or download automatically. No matter which of the last two choices, they will download and then when you hit the off button, windows will interrupt the process, tell you it needs to install the new updates and will shutdown soon as it's finished. In windows that's necessary so those upgrades will be there after the reboot and some of them can't be installed till shutdown or they'd interfere with your using the computer without a reboot.
AVG has a product to sell. Of course like any company with a product, they'd like to make some money for their effort. How many free items you get at the grocery store to seek your business? Not much usually, maybe some new thing to try on a toothpick. Yet AVG provides a fairly good AV product that is FREE, but they would also like to LIVE on something other than gratitude alone. So, everytime you upgrade their product it's entirely expected they'd offer you a higher quality experience at a price. That's just the way things are.
James, first I want to thank you for helping understand my personal problems/computer problem as well...
.. I am going to pick up some blank dvds to burn whatever the links you prescribed ..BEfore I do.. I do have a brand new 16 g sandisk usb memory drive if that is sufficient instead of using cd or dvd drives? My new Acer desktop has either capabilties..please bare with me..I will get on this project in a few hrs..this will certainly be an interesting project in that I already am beginning to understand what appears as a common issue (blue window of death) Again,, want to thank you for your help. .later, John
If you use a USB drive you can't really "burn" and ISO file to a USB drive. There is a round-a-bout way. All the info needed to accomplish that is on this site, I feel they have the easiest way to do it.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/
I would urge their Universal USB Installer.
this is for linux mint 9, but I'd urge you to use version 13 or higher, the process is the same.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/run-linux-mint-9-from-a-usb-flash-drive/
As I recall, you can download the wanted program from within the USB Universal Installer, which is the easiest way to do it.
======================================================
There's another way to put an installation of Linux on a flashdrive, but requires some knowledge of Linux and an extra program, if you aren't using a LIVE DVD.
In short, in windows you install a virtual CD/DVD clone program. You use that to open the ISO file. You can only make a full installation of Linux (not LIVE type) on the flashdrive, using the "Something Else" method in the installation program. It involves knowledge of creating partitions, assigning mount point, and other options available if desired.
=========================================================
The more difficult is to open the ISO file using the virtual CD or DVD program, copying the entire "disc" over onto the flashdrive, but that only creates a LIVE DVD. It also involves running grub-update command creating the boot sector so the system will run.
==========================================================
what is best? A LIVE DVD, or a full installation? Well, a live dvd is a "read only" system and especially when on a DVD it can't be corrupted, but it that means it can't be written to, updated, and so forth, therefore nothing is persistent. Anything desired to be saved as a file has to be placed into a readable partition created on the flashdrive, or on the hard drive. A full installation allows changes to be made and are persistent from one boot to the next.

I 'm hoping to do this this afternoon.. I'll be heading out to the store for DVD BLANKS
It seemed pretty easy enough on my desktop Acer.. I successfully burned on a DVD-R .. Now I'm ready for further instructions..? How/when do I running it in my HP pavilion laptop ? btw, want you to know prior to what happens on the laptop screen when I power up and press F11 right away.. the typical loading up windows circles and on the blue screen a small window appears and reading in it ..at the top it says.. x:windows/system32/cmd.exe and under that microft script host version 5.8 copyright etc.. than it reads under that rem model remcaption remdevice id remscsi port rempartition:4 rem pnp device id rem results couldn't perform the screening because couldn't detect 2 hhds on this system.. so what do I do press open and insert the DVD ? I will wait for a response before doing anything..thanks again James
Just be sure you didn't burn a single file with iso ending on it to the DVD, but used a burning program to burn the "image" file to it, which unzips the ISO and puts the files in all the right places, including the boot sector on the DVD.
You should be able to just put the disc into the DVD drive, restart the laptop and have it boot to it, according to this.

To save some time, there's a program available called Terminal from the menu in Linux. It opens a DOS like screen. You type the following commands into it and return the results to this thread.
blkid or blkid -o list
sudo fdisk -lu
inxi -v7
That should provide enough information to see what's going on with it.
If you want a graphical display of the partitions, from the Menu find the GParted program and open it.
I bought five so I will check verify and burn another one on the Acer desk top.. it uses a NERO program and it verified all files burned succesfully.. it ejected but what procedure/steps to load on the laptop? Read on the HP site each laptop uses different prompt keys..I can get to the command prompts and when I highlight t restart in safe mode (recommended).. it says it is loading files.. than the blue screen and the window withrem.. could not perform screening because couldn't detect 2 HHDs on this system.. Anyway, I inserted the DVD at this point but do I shutoff and restart and press f11 or f10 or f2 .. not sure what to do to run the dvd at this point
I'm in the process of diagnostic testing now using the start up test first.. I probably need a new harddrive but want to be sure...I will be doing this for awhile tonight.. also leaving tomorrow on a getaway trip for ice fishing lol.. bbl and let you know how i'm doing.. thank you once again James
memory passed smart check passed short DST failed.. I believe I read the failure I.D. code to an HP support assistant and it was explained the code meant a bad hard drive.. but I do not believe I ever created a backup drive for a replacement hard drive.. andI fewel so ripped off by both HP and Microsoft which I do not trust and not willing to accept expensive repairs that were estimated to cost over 400.00 in refurbishing this 2 year old HP pavilion I bought brand new in May 2011.. I would rather deal with another os perhaps linux or even a MAC instead of supporting microsoft product and I certainly will never recommend HP or buy another one of their products if I can help it. James,, do you think I can order a compatible hard drive on ebay and go with a linux os ? What is linux and is that what you had me burn? or is it just a diagnostic dvd I burned from linux? Could you explain in short if It is better buying a new computewr or fixing /replacing hardware /debugging / upgrading this two year old HP G7 pavilion 1150 us thank you and good night..I shall follow up this weekend when I get home.
Any hard drive that is 2.5" wide and with SATA fittings that are between 500GB and 2TB should work for you in that computer. If you have a low profile drive, if yours is a thinner laptop, then you have to take that into account also.
Here's a couple of the less expensive 500GB variety.

My NEW DESKTOP ASPIRE ACER HAS WINDOWS 8 AND A BURNING PROGRAM PREINSTALLED.. BUT HOW DO i OPEN /CHECK HERE ON THE SAME PC? whatever i thought burned successfully isn't supported on windows media player,,
I think I saved files to my Acer desk top.. and thought I succesfully burned all ten linux files from the third link in your reply..Before I'd resort to that, I'd want to use the Linux system from the DVD to save your pictures, music, and other files to a backup storage device. But I tried running in what appeared to be running cd rom. in the crash hp pavilion.. still blue window screen .. do I check to be sure driver cd rom starts first? Do I press esc on power up and f8 to adjust this disc player setting? Also , how do I check to be sure the dvd has been burned? Shouldn't I be able to see this on my Acer? .. Now I am not sure but thisa is the second dvd-r and not able to re write over so I think it burned.. but still need how to open it. I'll try again.
In over a decade since I handed out the advice about Linux (see http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm ) I have yet to see anyone succeed in making a working bootable Linux CD/DVD from "files."
I'd toss that and read again one or more of the many pages on how to get an .ISO image and how to burn a CD/DVD with said .ISO image (which is one file.)
Bob
But only because i see the dvd won't burn again and that in "computer" I see the dvd showing disc space 1.8 gb free of 4.38 .. and also NERO verified burn was successful.. trouble now is how do I use it? I mean .. I am not sure how to run the burned disc even on the ACER I used to create the disc..! did you say if It is burned correctly that it should run automatically upon inserting the disc?.. I guess I will review your helpful posts.. read more up on all this starting with the OSDisc.com link you provided.. I will in time review all on this thread .. I am pretty certain after pressing f 11 and still just a blue screen with only my moving pointer on the screen after closing the window providing the hard drive failure data.. HP support by phone evidently verified the code as a disk failure so, I suppose I will eventually need a new replacement hard drive.. and possibly another recovery OS disc of some sort.James, thanks again with all the help getting me started in the right direction for this project..
I've lost count of how many times. Forget Nero.

I must have burned the two blank dvd-r wrong thought it looked easy enough but, I guess I don't understand yet.. I never burned a dvd before..let alone anything for crash recovery disc. using the pre installed burning software Nero may be easy ..but would you say to download this 7-zip program as you think it might work best for beginner like me? I only burned two out of five dvd-r i bought at cvs for 5 dollars lol.. i have three blanks left.. i guess i have the linux files on MY COMPUTER so do I open 7 -zip and make it default burner?
