Question

Windows 7 & continual "shut down"

Mar 8, 2016 3:26PM PST

Recently my Windows 7 always shows the "shut down" button when I want to put my computer to sleep. It's the one like after an update. It's the shut down with the yellow triangle with what looks to me like the letter "i". If you do a mouse over it says, "Installs updates then shuts down your computer."

My actual setting I have selected shows "sleep". I can put my computer to sleep and leave but when I come back the sign in screen is showing. This is something new also, Before when I would put my computer to sleep it would show the process and the screen would be blank and I would have to move my mouse, etc. to wake it up.

I have more questions but I'll make this it for right now!

Anyone have an idea what's causing this? Plain

About the install then shuts down.

That's how it works here. Some updates have to do that and the old options return after Microsoft updates.

Continuing concern about Windows 7 the "shut down" choice
Mar 9, 2016 6:44AM PST

But you see, it goes on like that continually for days on end and when I don't choose the "shut down" option but I choose the "sleep" option something wakes up my computer and it isn't me. Never, for as long as I have been using a computer (20 yrs), has that ever happened to my computer(s) before.

Like right now I just booted up my computer system not more than 5 to 10 minutes ago and already the "shut down" button is showing like I described in my first post. At first it was the choice I want was displayed, "sleep", then it turns to "shut down" with the little yellow triangle with what looks like an "i" right away and it will remain like that for as long as I have my computer on today. And even if I choose from the drop down menu, "sleep", something, and it's not me will wake up my computer and when I come back to my computer it's at the sign in screen. Then it will happen that same way tomorrow I can pretty well bank on it. So what's up with that?

I don't know where you're referring to when you say, "That's how it works here.", but it's never, but for within the at least week, has it ever worked that way for my computer(s). If you're alluding to MS updates, it's rather strange I should have that many updates that this should continue without stopping for days and days and days as my updates are always current.

I do appreciate your reply to my posting.

I may be misunderstanding something.

If you are leaving it without the updates I worry that it may be in some odd state so my advice on that is update it. These updates are now weekly so this annoying issue may occur every week.

Some updates take more than one shut down and update cycle. This area is upsetting a lot of folk and some exit to using Chromebooks or an Apple PC.

There's also another area and it's deep for some and it's about some PCs that can wake on demand such as updates etc. Then we have the issues of various infections which isn't on my list here yet.

https://www.google.com/#q=windows+7+wakes+up+from+sleep finds priors about waking from sleep. I have no reason to pick a specific article from the clues so far.

About 'continual shut-down'

I had a similar problem not long ago. "Something" changed the Power Settings on my laptop and it kept going to sleep after 20 minutes.
Double check your Power Settings and don't forget to expand the categories to check the particular settings.
Also, like R. Proffitt said, some updates require more than one restart to write them into your system files.

Another thing that you can check is if iusb3mon.exe is running in Task Manager. This checks your USB ports periodically and essentially 'wiggles' your mouse - waking up your computer. You can turn this off in your Start Up in msconfig.

Shut down appears constantly

I have the same issue - every time I pick the Start button the Shut down button appears with a yellow shield with the message 'Installs updates and then shuts down your computer'. I have done this many times and it still occurs. Windows Updates are all installed successfully - the only one pending is the upgrade to Windows 10 - is it the reason for this behaviour? I don't want to install Win10 at the moment because of compatibility issues with some of my software - I am waiting for compatible upgrades to them first.

That's My Thought Also

I've been thinking along the same line as your issue. I don't want Windows 10 and am seriously considering another operating system. Microsoft has gotten way too intrusive and I don't like it.

Thank you for your response!

Error Event Weekly reports Is it connected to the net when you put it to sleep. If not, try disconnecting it from the Net and then see if problem persists. May be some updates cause it to shut down. Also it is a good habit to generate the Error Event Weekly reports for Application and System log to check the future malfunctioning
