Windows 7 and Canoscan 8600F

Jun 20, 2010 2:07AM PDT

Windows 7 tells me there is a compatability problem with Canoscan 8600F, and directs me to Canon website, where eventually I find some information on drivers, but nothing very clearly directed towards this and so far nothing I have done with downloads has solved the problem.

What is the problem?

If it's the compatibility report then you will never fix that one as it will only go away if we uninstall the scanner and its software. When we install Windows 7 we go get drivers for our machine (which is far from automatic) and then we should be ok.

But what is the problem?

Issue with 8600F
Jun 27, 2010 7:41AM PDT

The windows7 website says that 7 is compatible with the 8600f. But when I plug it in, it requires new drivers. I went to canon site and downloaded 64bit drivers, executed the job, and plugged the unit back in. It still cannot find the drivers. I found where the extracted files were but they did not load to program sub/dir which is where other drivers go. Even by manually directing the driver lookup to the real location on my c:/, it says the drivers are not found. Anyone have any ideas? It installs the icon for the 8600f, but will not run anything. I uninstalled the program from the control panel, and reinstalled twice, but no good results. Any ideas?

Then it's you and Canon.

Driver issues like that often take a call to the maker to report "your drivers didn't work on my machine."

By what you wrote it appears you did the right steps but it fails. All that I can guess and I would be guessing is that a reboot after driver installs might be required.

Worth noting is that some drivers like HP often require us to remove firewalls or answer yes to allow changes and more. But HP documents that today where I am left to guess if Canon told you that.

Answer on how to fix this problem-8600F Windows 7
Jun 27, 2010 11:30AM PDT

1. Click Start.

2. Type MSCONFIG in the Start Search box and press Enter on the keyboard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

3. The System Configuration Utility will appear.

4. Make a note of which startup selection your computer is set on. If your startup selection is set to Normal, switch it to Selective Startup by placing the radio button dot next to Selective Startup.

5. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

6. Click the Apply button.

7. Click on the Services tab at the top.

8. Place a check mark next to 'Hide all Microsoft Services'.

9. Click the Disable All button.

10. Click Apply.

11. Click the OK button.

12. Windows will prompt you to restart your computer; click Restart.

Once the system restarts, try reinstalling the drivers from Canon.

After you reinstall, it should work fine, it did on mine.
Then you go back into msconfig and reset your startup options to normal and reboot. Worked like a champ. I got this answer from Canon this evening.
