Re: forgot admin password

In reply to: Windows 7 Admin PW HELP!

It's recommended to have (at least) two administrative accounts, just in case something (anything this is just an example) happens with the first.
And it's recommended to store passwords (both local and Internet, and don't forget to include the pin-code for your creditcard) in a password manager (Keepass is free).

So consider to follow these 2 best practices when you're up and running again.

Anyway, we usually advise to use ntpasswd from http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ to reset a Windows password.
Member willy linked to an alternative method in https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/win-8-password-recovery-reset-616078/ ; it works in Windows 7 also.

forgot admin password

In reply to: Re: forgot admin password

Upon startup, once it reaches login screen it would automatically have chosen my admin user, and tell my username or password incorrect, and it would not log in. i would be forced to log into a Standard user.

Ive stumbled upon pogostik as well as isunshare and other sites similar to these. none have effectivley been helpful.

ive reached the point where i need "backdoors/loopholes" to edit/delete admin pass

NTPASSWD works for me.

In reply to: forgot admin password

But I'm finding folk call it unhelpful as many today have never booted a CD or much else. You'll have to tell more what you mean by "effectively been (un)helpful."

the pw reset sites would allow my to download/save to my usb. after resartong pc ADMIN would not allow PW RESET. Although STD USERs allowed full use

The thing is, NTPASSWD does not save to USB.

In reply to: reply

And while I could save the .iso to USB it would not be bootable. I fear you have yet to get NTPASSWD to boot and reset the password as noted in many tutorials.

OK, let's say you can't use the free methods. Hit lostpassword.com and buy their stuff.

Re: doesn't work

In reply to: reply

The other options then:
- back to factory conditions (how to depends on too many things to give a step-by-step)
- willy's way in the thread I linked to

Having no password on your admin account is a rather good precaution against forgetting it. Quite a good idea if you're the only regular user of your PC, and instruct visitors to use the guest account (enable that first). Not a very good idea if your PC is used by your teen childs also.

Pogostick Offline NT Password Changer

In reply to: Windows 7 Admin PW HELP!

I use this from a bootable CD or DVD, but can also run from USB. It is included on Hiren's BootCD - Keep in mind that many tools on this disc are flagged as dangerous or blocked by most anti-malware products because they can be used for both good and bad reasons.

You can download a zip of the ISO image at: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
Contents of disc are listed at: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
Instructions for burning it to USB are at: http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk

Or you can just get it at: http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ -- I just haven't had good luck with their bootable on large format discs.

Instructions for correct use of Offline NT Password Changer are at: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/resetting-windows-password/
