Resolved Question

Windows 7(64bit) wont boot from HD after installing with USB

Oct 13, 2014 1:58PM PDT

Hello people!

My first post on this forum, hoping you can help me out.

So i made a bootable USB-stick with a program called Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/) to install Windows 7(64bit) after upgrading alot of hardware on my computer.

After installing Windows on my HDD and installing all the drivers needed, i removed the bootable USB-stick and now when i startup windows wont boot from the HDD.

If i connect the USB Windows starts up just fine.
I have a MSI AMD3+ motherboard, if that information helps.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Jacob

Problem solved
Oct 14, 2014 12:10AM PDT

Just to clarify, I had to make the boot USB seeing as i dont have a CD/DVD-reader on my new computer, and when i used Windows BootUSB-tool it failed because i was trying to make a bootable USB for installing Windows 64bit on my old 32bit windows laptop. So thats why i used rufus.

Now i dont know why windows booted and worked just fine from the usb stick, but i had - ofcourse - forgotten to put my HDD first in boot-order in BIOS. Infact, I hadn't added it to the bootlist at all. So there we have it, works just fine now. I guess my troubleshooting was pretty off last night.

Thanks for the replies guys Happy

To my knowledge, that's not a MS approved method

and is designed to fail. I'll presume you made this USB stick with a genuine MS copy of Windows so tell more about where you got it.

Why not install from a DVD?
Oct 13, 2014 6:55PM PDT

That's the usual way. The DVD, of course, has to be the official holographed one from Microsoft.

What's the boot sequence in the BIOS?

Moreover, it's common (if not necessary) to remove the install media and boot from the HDD to finish the install before installing the additional drivers. So it's somewhat strange, what you did.

I'd try this again but with a Microsoft approved method.

Now if you think Rufus should have worked, take it back to it's author and their support?
