I tried the test ant tells me that the ctl key is not doing anything. Now what?
First if the CTRL key is the only one not working, you can use the other one. Or you can try cleaning underneath that key - I like to use sticky notes. Or you can take it to the local shop. Here I paid $30 to have mine cleaned. Or you can buy a USB keyboard - they range in price from as little as $4 to $100 (maybe more); some are light and flexible but these cost more. Or you can replace the keyboard. I don't know what this involves, but it could get expensive.
Now the final alternative; you could buy a new laptop. That's what I ended up doing after trying to clean it myself, then spending $30 to have a shop clean it. My laptop was 5 years old, several keys didn't work, the battery needed replacing, and the USB ports were worn enough that they didn't always make good connections. So I decided God wanted me to get a new laptop.
Yep, half kidding, but I got a new Dell laptop with an I5-6200U and love it. My old laptop never lasted more than 4 hours on the battery, but yesterday I ran 3.5 hours straight, and it said it was good for 4 more hours! I let it blank the screen after 15 min. idle, but have turned sleep mode completely off, so that really really impresses me. YMMV.

Good luck.
