Windows 2003 & ADSL connection

Mar 15, 2004 1:47AM PST

Hi everybody, I've got a windows 2003 server enterprise edition. I have 2 network cards, 1 for my internal network and the other to get conected to the adsl modem, when I try to setup the RRAS to create a VPN, my network card connected to the modem doesn't get any IP, and so the entire network cant access to internet. what is missing??
Any help would be apreciated!!

Actually, this sounds proper to me.

It should work but it doesn't. When I create the adsl connection, it creates a virtual connection because when I start to configure the RRAS, the wizard asks me to select the network adapter that is attached to the adsl modem and it apears with an ip 169.x.x.x, but the adsl connection has de correct ip that is assigned by the ISP. My network card does't get the public IP, but the virtual connection does.
When configuring, the RRAS prompts you to select de NIC that is attached to the modem, it only appears my 2 network cards (1 internal network, 1 adsl modem), and it does't appear the virtual connection regardless the connection to my ISP is established and working OK on the server only.

In short.

I fixed a local setup like that by adding a Linksys VPN router. The issue of setting up a VPN server can cause ICS to fail... Your choice how to solve.

Thanks for that solution, but I need to use my server as a router and avoid to buy a VPN router.
I will not share my internet connection by ICS, I need to share it by RRAS configured as a NAT and VPN Server.
I made it work with a cable account, but with an ADSL account I can?t, my network card get an ip like this: 169.254.255.201 I can't link my modem IP to my NIC.
-My internal network card wich is used for my LAN has this IP: 192.168.0.2
-My network card connected to the ADSL modem get an IP like this: 169.254.255.201
-My ADSL modem gets an IP like this: 201.129.158.xxx
I want to know if there is a way to link or redirect the internet trafic to the network card.
Thanks for your comments, are so useful.

DHCP and be a server...
Mar 15, 2004 10:44AM PST

Here's the rub. For years the issue is how to have a server DHCP such a setting and be a DHCP server to others. Nutty!

OK, you don't want that 169.x.x.x number. Take the number that the DSL gave you and code that into the NIC that connects to the DSL modem. Same with all the other numbers (netmask, DNS)...

If it works, fine, if not, it's 50 bucks for the simple one VPN-in Linksys. Few bucks more for the better model.

If you can't get a Linksys, there's always Linux.
