Windows 2000 and modem and sound card issues

by murphmm / May 6, 2004 7:42 AM PDT

I have recently upgraded from Win 98 to 2000 and everything was fine. I then went to the Microsoft site and installed SP4 since then I have no sound from my soundcard and my modem is not working properly. I can dial up fine and a connection is established fine but then if I go to a site only about 1 or 2k are uploaded and then nothing further happens. The connection is still there but no further data is uploaded. I got a patch from Microsotfs site but it has not worked. I have also tried to update my modem driver but the problem is still the same.

Can anyone help me on this?

I'd really appreciate it.

Upgrades rarely go smoothly, any issues with the old OS are usually carried over. Short of doing a clean install of 2K, I would check for updated motherboard drivers for 2000 (you would do that for a clean install as well). Then new 2K drivers for the modem and sound.

Tell about "tried" and where you get your drivers from?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / May 6, 2004 7:48 AM PDT

Microsoft doesn't provide drivers so that's up to the person that maintains that install on that machine (us?)

To cause further pain, those who did not keep the patches up to date will likely have to deal with the new worms. To deal with that, please read the posts in the security forum.

In closing, without make/model of the devices that don't work, plus what motherboard (or make/model machine) I won't be able to guide yor to drivers.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
