Question

Windows 10 won't let me sign in

I fired up the computer this morning, and the screen came up dark. OK, I said, it's Wednesday so it's updating. It finally put the photo of Mr Ranier up. I left-clicked the mouse to get the password sign in, and it went dark again. OK, I said, it's still updating. It's been two hours now, and I still can't get to the log in. All I get is Mr Ranier and then another dark screen. What do I do now? Sure glad I got an old Windows 7 machine that still works fine.

Five hours now, and still no sign-in. I've powered it off and on a few times, and that doesn't help. Whatever key I hit makes it go to the gray screen.

Still down

Amazing that nobody on this forum can answer my question. You guys are supposed to be experts.

Here's another symptom--yesterday, McAfee told me my test period was over and they were cancelling. Been using AVG since the beginning. I wonder if McAfee did something nasty because I didn't pay for their antivirus?

That might be a valid thought

It has been known to cause internet failure when the anti-virus goes out of date. Un-install McAfee to see if that was the problem. You might need to use the removal tool from McAfee, see this guide for more info

Re: McAfee

Why did you install McAfee Antivirus if you're a long time user of AVG already?

- Collapse -
McAfee came with it

McAfee came with it when I bought the PC. I THOUGHT I installed AVG, but Windows 10 doesn't tell me anything. I'd dearly love to uninstall McAfee but I still can't get past the log-in, and can't bring it up in safe mode. Geez, it doesn't even want to power off. If I try to power off, it just comes back on.

Answer
Let's Start Over... We Need More Information Please

First, tell us more about the computer. Make and model? Laptop or desktop? Age of the computer? Which version of Windows 10 are you running? Is the latest "Fall Creator's Update"? And the mouse you're using, is it a USB external mouse or an the older style PS2 plug mouse?

When was the last time you took the cover off the computer and cleaned the dust out from inside with compressed air? If not recently, please do so.

Next, In your first post you state that " I've powered it off and on a few times" but in your last post, you state "it doesn't even want to power off. If I try to power off, it just comes back on". So... have you actually been able to shut the computer down completely. HOW are you shutting down the computer? Have you tried holding down the power button for 20 seconds?

And as to the "It finally put the photo of Mr Ranier up", are you referring to the Windows 10 lock screen that appears just prior to showing the log in line?

Next, in order to attempt to let Windows load the login screen, have you unplugged ALL USB devices from the computer, such as printers, cameras, etc.? If not, please do so.

Hope this helps and let us know more.

HP LAPTOP--ABOUT FOUR MONTHS OLD

Which version of Windows 10 are you running? Is the latest "Fall Creator's Update"?
DUNNO.

And the mouse you're using, is it a USB external mouse or an the older style PS2 plug mouse?
WIRELESS LOGITECH. CAME WITH THE LAPTOP.

When was the last time you took the cover off the computer and cleaned the dust out from inside with compressed air? If not recently, please do so.
I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT

Next, In your first post you state that " I've powered it off and on a few times" but in your last post, you state "it doesn't even want to power off. If I try to power off, it just comes back on". So... have you actually been able to shut the computer down completely. HOW are you shutting down the computer? Have you tried holding down the power button for 20 seconds?
OK, 20 SECONDS DID IT. IT'S OFF NOW

And as to the "It finally put the photo of Mr Ranier up", are you referring to the Windows 10 lock screen that appears just prior to showing the log in line?
YES. IT SHOWS THE CURRENT TIME AND DATE, TOO.

Next, in order to attempt to let Windows load the login screen, have you unplugged ALL USB devices from the computer, such as printers, cameras, etc.? If not, please do so.
NO DEVICES WERE EVER CONNECTED--JUST THE MOUSE

Hope this helps and let us know more.
IT'S SITTING THERE WITH POWER OFF, HOPING YOU'LL TELL ME WHAT TO DO NEXT.

Then Try This

Assuming you have a touchpad on this HP laptop (no model number mentioned), then remove the USB mouse, then restart the computer and see if pressing the touchpad at the lock screen will then allow you to login correctly.

Hope this helps.

YES!!!

I pulled the USB wireless connector for the mouse and IT WORKED!!! I'm running an AVG virus scan right now--no threats, it says.

Thanks! I would never have come up with that solution in a zillion years.

So, now what? Replace the mouse?

Nope, I'm Guessing It's The Problem Mentioned In This Link

Mouse is working

I plugged the USB back in, and the mouse is working. Maybe it was McAfee's final shot: "Don't want to buy McAfee? We'll show you! Figure out the sign in problem, ha ha!

I'm actually afraid to do anything with Windows 10. It's the worst operating system in history. I'm even afraid to turn it off now, in fear the problems will come back.

Love my Windows 7--I understand most of what it does.

Thanks again for your help.

Then Uninstall McAfee Like This

First, download the manual uninstaller using the link below.

Note: Clicking on the link below will immediately bring up a download dialogue window.
http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp

Once that's done, uninstall McAfee from the Control Panel-Programs and Features section. Once that's done, run the downloaded manual uninstaller to remove any remnants.

And after that, make sure your Windows Updates are fully done by clicking on the Start button, then the "Settings" icon, then the "Update and Security" section. When that opens, click on the "Check for Updates" button and let Windows do it's thing.

Hope this helps.

And Before Attempting to Use The Mouse Again...

...Be sure to replace the batteries inside it. Although it may be relatively new, the batteries may be junk.

Hope this helps.
