Question

Windows 10 Without A Password

Jul 2, 2019 12:12PM PDT

I searched form and ran "netplwiz" followed the steps by unchecking "use password" and when I boot up I get a screen "user name and password incorrect" and the only way I can get logged in is to use my old PIN. What am I doing wrong?

Answer
AFAIK. Local accounts ONLY.

If you use an email login, you should see the PIN show up if you uncheck that.

Are you aware of the difference between local and the email login systems?

Accounts (sign in)

I'm not totally familiar but assume the msft acct would be more secure. I just want to keep it simple same as with my old Win 7

You would have to use a local account.

Old Win 7 had local and for work, server accounts. If you use the Microsoft account system, this is not as it was in Win 7.

We Had Another User With A Similar Issue

The Autologin using "netplwiz" has caused issues for others, especially when performing the major update/upgrades. Read the discussion at the link below and see why the user seems to go back to the traditional local login method which DOES require a password.

All the computers I take care of use a local login to access the primary account. A few have mistakenly created Microsoft logins but chose to change to the old style.

Hope this helps.

Windows 10 Without Password
Jul 3, 2019 1:45PM PDT

Thx. for all the advise everyone of which I followed but my Ver 1903 no matter what I tried will only let me add a "msft acct" and not a "local acct." It is not a serious problem I will just continue to sign in.

I'm on 1803.

Let's see what the add user looks like. I click on "I don't have this person's sign on information" and on the next screen is "Add a user without a Microsoft Account"

So it's working here, on 1803 but they did move the cheese after they grated it.

Here's How I Do It On Version 1903
Jul 3, 2019 4:35PM PDT

First, access "netplwiz.exe" as an admin and place a CHECK mark in the box that says: "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer". Restart the computer and login.

Then, click on the Start button, Settings icon, then Accounts. Once there, I click on "Family and Other Users", then "Add someone else to this PC". Once there, click on the blue link: "I don't have this person's sign-in information", then select "Add a user without a Microsoft account". At the next page, create the local user's name and password.

Hope this helps.

This IS How I Do It
Jul 3, 2019 4:53PM PDT

I lucked out and is why I came back to report. For some strange reason (call it a win 10 perk) last time I booted up just before desktop opened I got a screen asking if I wanted to sign in with a local acct.....I jumped on it followed the prompts and low and behold I have a local acct. now. This is
something I can't pass on so I am saving your proceedure Griff in case it fouls up on me again.
I'm sure U will hear for me again crying for Help as I work my way through this Win 10 : )
