Question

windows 10 recording/microphone failure

Jul 4, 2016 5:59PM PDT

I am trying to get windows 10 to record voice. I have failed. I have googled and followed any number of suggestions and failed at every one. Here is what I now have:
Audio inputs and outputs
Microphone
speakers
stereo mix (default for input)
realtec high definition audio

At one point I removed realtec in favor of microsoft high definition. When I rebooted realtec was back. The realtec driver is the latest and greatest.

I have tried both the microphone and stereo mix as default and neither hears anything. I have turned off all sound enhancements.

I have run trouble shooting several times to no avail.

At one point I was trying to record something and you tube started up and the utube audio got recorded but not my voice.

I have now spent all day trying to make this work. I wish there was someplace that had a step by step setup for this stuff as I fear I now have a genuine mess on my hands.

Thank you.............

Clarification Request
I don't see any machine details.

It's possible recording has never worked on your PC. But there's not a word about the PC so what if it's just broke?

the machine
Jul 5, 2016 11:30AM PDT

This system was built by me. Its got a quad core intel chip and 4gb of memory runs at 3.?mhz. It got a new motherboard last year. This is all about installing skype on it. Its my wife's machine and the only machine with windows on it (the rest have ubuntu). The initial problem is that the camera, about 5 years old, lost its hearing (pressed the on/off button, on the connector line and that switch was a mess/broken). I also had to swap out the sound cable extension as it was a bit chancy too. Then I got it so that when recording I could see the sound being recorded. The size of the different files created also changed their size based on the length of the recording. I used vlc to play said recordings - there was nary a sound in spite of the display of sound (moving graph). I then checked some other audio files just to make sure vlc was working properly. I am currently back to no sound being produced. I have also noticed that I have a primary recording device (microphone) and a primary communications device (stereo mix). I have disabled them, one at a time, enabled both, etc. and that made no difference at all. Its all realtec high definition audio.

realtek version
Jul 5, 2016 1:52PM PDT

I am using realtek version 6.0.1.7831 Microsoft installed this driver when I told it to check for updates. I can only assume that I have the right driver.

I have also noticed that if I try and test recording by putting speech to to a file for playback that the system consistently mutes my microphone. Perhaps I should disable either the microphone (default) or the stereo mix device (communications default). I think I can make one both things (not sure)

My apologies for the previous, empty reply. Pressed enter which I shouldn't have done <G>

Just in case.

There is a setting in W10 to stop automatic driver updates.

And even in W10, Microsoft's driver search is not always correct. I tend to use the old fashioned ways.
