Question

Windows 10 install fails at start up

When I attempted to start up a new laptop to install genuine Windows 10, (downloaded from Microsoft website), via USB I received the error message,

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We'll restart for you".

Error message also said ... "Attempted write to read only memory (WimFsf.sys)".

The laptop attempted to start several times but the same message was seen.

The new laptop is an ASUS X554LJ-XX025D, free dos.

Please help as this is my sons Christmas present.

Many thanks

What is this Free DOS?

This sounds like you didn't get the laptop with W10. Try removing all partitions then try the install again.

The laptop came with "free dos" and the Windows 10 was downloaded from the Microsoft website.

What is the procedure to "remove all partitions".

Many thanks

I've used the windows installer, GPARTED and fdisk. There is probably a dozen ways to do this.

Not being a tech guy I am not sure how to use GPARTED or fdisk if I can't get past the error message which pops up immediately after the initial ASUS screen.

There are now hundreds of pages on the web

About booting GPARTED CD/USB so the thing is, I find many folk struggle to make a bootable CD.

OK, pull the HDD out and remove the partitions when it's on another PC.
Or try DBAN (again, all on the web.)

Why did you buy a computer without an operating system? I am really puzzle as how this can be done. Assuming we can boot the usb but will the internet be functioning..and without the internet then how can we download windows 10. Something just doesn't figure in my mind.

The laptop .. an ASUS X554LJ .. came with something called "FREE dos", apparently this is normal for many laptops.

The Windows 10 was downloaded to a USB using the MediaCreation tool from the microsoft website.

The USB was the inserted into the new laptop, an ASUS X554LJ, and the start button was pressed.

Then immediately after the ASUS splash screen the following error page was shown.

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We'll restart for you".

Error message also said ... "Attempted write to read only memory (WimFsf.sys)".

The laptop attempted to start several times but the same message was seen.

What I am trying to find out is how do I get past this error screen.

The Media Creation Tool is used for

a clean install after you've done an upgrade from WIndows 7 or 8.1 to WIndows 10 or if you have a WIndows 7 or 8.1 key to enter. You have to have either WIndows 7 or 8.1 on the same computer to qualify for the free upgrade to Windows 10. I have never heard of any computer coming with FreeDos. I would contact Asus which may force you to purchase Windows 10.

The first thing to do is to have a blank HDD.
